Melbourne Cup Night
100 Reasons to celebrate for Peat
Winning the toss and electing to bat, Southern District started shakily against Port Adelaide in their Round 3 encounter at Bice Oval. Coming to the crease at 5/122, the right arm medium pace bowler played a dominate innings hitting 13 boundaries during his 152 minute stay at the crease. At stumps, Peat had guided the Stingrays to 7/269, finishing with a personal tally of 103 not out. Stingray's FeBLUary initiative wins award
The Southern District Cricket Club has been acknowledged for their efforts in raising the awareness of mental health, by being announced as a winner at the 5th Annual Dr Margaret Tobin Awards held yesterday.
Last season the Southern District implemented a number a number of initiatives to celebrate ‘FeBLUary’ a month dedicated by the Stingrays to link with their metropolitan and country zones, as well as the national organisation beyondblue, to raise the awareness of the effect of depression in our community. Initiatives undertaken by Southern District included a change to blue coloured playing caps in all grades, blue stumps, a Twenty20 match against the Police ‘blues’ and club members wearing ‘Beyond Blue’ wristbands.
Such was the success of this promotion, all Grade Cricket Clubs have agreed to join in the ‘FeBLUary’ initiative in 2009. Subsequently, SACA has programmed the round of Grade Cricket on 7 and 14 February 2009 as the ‘FeBLUary Round’ where all Grade Cricket Clubs will work together to raise awareness of this important cause.
SACA congratulates the Southern District Cricket on achieving this special award.

Deitz 100th and final 'A' Grade Game
Much will be said of Deeta leaving and it is appropriate that this edition of the newsletter pays tribute to Shane and the magnificent impact he has had on our club.
Everyone who is not playing on Sunday is asked to come down to Adelaide No2 to wear red and support our A grade team and be part of Deeta’s last day – Be part of a piece of Stingray history and show Deeta the respect that he deserves.
A full summary of Deeta’s performances will be in the next newsletter but with over 5300 A grade runs and 21 wickets and a truck load of trophies, awards and more Shane Deitz leaves a big legacy at our club.
The SDCC wishes Shane all the best in the future, thanks him for all he has done for our club and hopes to see him back very soon.

Changes To Playing Conditions
Bylaw changes for 2008/09
The SACA Cricket Committee has approved a number of changes to playing conditions for 2008/09 and following is a summary of the more significant changes to playing conditions.
This summary is NOT a complete list of the playing conditions and has been designed as a guide for participants.
For a full explanation of playing conditions, participants MUST refer to the Grade Cricket Bylaws 2008-2009.
General Playing Conditions
- A new ball is only required to be taken in the first innings of each team. A new or used ball (in good condition), as approved by the umpires may be used in the second innings.
- A second new ball may be taken in A Grade at the completion of 75 overs. A second new ball is not permitted to be taken in the first innings of any other grade.
- Changes to the Heat Policy provide SACA with flexibility to alter the start time or number of overs in all matches in any grade.
- In Men's A, B, C and D Grades – batting and bowling performance points are only awarded in the first innings. (Women's A, B and C grades, Boys Under 16 and Under 14 grades remain the same as last season with performance points being awarded in both the first and second innings).
- Women's C Grade – a player may retire at any stage of her innings or must immediately retire upon reaching 50. The batter shall be recorded as 'retired – not out' and may resume their innings at the fall of the 2nd last wicket (ie at the fall of the ninth wicket).
- Under 14 Red and White and Ray Sutton Shield - a player may retire at any stage of his innings. The batter shall be recorded as 'retired – not out' and may resume his innings at the fall of the 2nd last wicket (ie at the fall of the ninth wicket).
Two Day Matches
(Applies to Men's A, B, C and D Grades and Boys Under 16 Red and White and Under 14 Red and White Grades)
- Playing times and number of overs
o A Grade – 11.40am to 6.00pm – 90 overs
o B, C and D Grade – 1.00pm to 6.00pm – 80 overs
o Under 16 – 1.30pm to 6.00pm – 70 overs
o Under 14 – 1.30pm to 5.30pm – 60 overs
- In all grades in the first innings, the team batting first shall (unless bowled out), bat until they have received the objective number of overs at which time play will cease for the day (for example: in an A Grade match, if the team batting first is not dismissed, their innings will conclude at the end of the 90th over – even if this is achieved prior to 6.00pm – ie if the team batting first is 8/250 at the end of the 90th over and the time is 5.55pm, stumps will be immediately called). Naturally, if the 90th over is not bowled by 6.00pm, play will continue until such time that the 90th over is completed (and penalties may apply).
- If the team batting first is dismissed, the team batting second will bat to the scheduled completion of play (for example: in an A Grade match if the team batting first is dismissed prior to 5.50pm, the team batting second will only be required to bat until 6.00pm – regardless of the number of overs bowled during the day).
- Once a first innings result has been achieved in Men's A, B, C and D Grades and Boys Under 16 Red and White and Under 14 Red and White Grades, the match will continue to the scheduled conclusion (ie stumps on day 2) unless both captains agree that no further result can be achieved and play may be terminated. This however, can not occur any earlier than the tea interval or 2 hours prior to stumps (whichever occurs first).
- Penalties for slow over rates in A, B, C and D Grades have been changed. A penalty of 6 runs will be applied for each over not completed in the appropriate time and will be added to the opposition team's score. (Under 16 and Under 14 Grades will continue to have a .25 performance point penalty applied).
Limited Over Matches
(Applies to Men's A, B, C and D Grades, XXXX Gold One Day Cup, Women's A Grade and BankSA Shield)
- Playing times and number of overs
o A, B, C, D and XXXX Gold Cup – 11.00am to 6.10pm – 50 overs
o Women's A Grade – 11.50am to 6.00pm – 50 overs
o BankSA Shield – 9.00am to 4.10pm – 50 overs
- Normal limited over rules apply in that once the match has started, there is no reduction in overs for any time lost
- Each bowler is limited to 10 overs
- Fielding Restrictions
o First block of Powerplay overs (overs 1-10) – no more than two fielders allowed outside the fielding restriction circle and there must be two stationery fielders in catching positions
o Two further 5 over blocks of Powerplay overs – one block of overs at a time chosen by the fielding team and the other block of overs at a time chosen by the batting team – no more than three fielders allowed outside the fielding restriction circle during these Powerplay overs
o For the remaining 30 overs of the match (non Powerplay overs) – no more than five fielders allowed outside the fielding restriction circle
- The match terminates upon a result being achieved except in Women's A Grade whereby the match shall continue (in a second innings) until at least 5.00pm when both captains can agree to call off play.
- If any Men's A, B, C and D Grade 'two day' matches are totally abandoned on the first day, the match will revert to a limited overs match (commencing at 11.00am) on day 2.
- Men's A Grade matches scheduled as one day fixtures (or the second day of a two day fixture where the first day is totally abandoned) and XXXX Gold One Day Cup matches will be played with a white ball and coloured clothing. A red ball and regular cricket attire will apply to men's B, C and D Grade and Women's A Grade matches. BankSA Shield will play with a red ball (white in day/night matches) and teams have the option to wear coloured clothing.
One Day Matches
(Applies to Women's B and C Grades and Boys Under 16 Red and White, Under 14 Red and White and Ray Sutton Shield Grades)
- No changes from last season other than once a first innings result has been achieved, the match will continue to the scheduled conclusion (ie stumps) unless both captains agree that no further result can be achieved and play can be terminated. This however, can not occur any earlier than 1 hour prior to stumps.
Twenty20 Matches
(Applies to Men's XXXX Gold Twenty20 Cup, Under 19, Under 16 and Under 14 exhibition matches, Legends Competition and Women's A, B and C Grades)
- Maximum of 20 overs per team
- Innings time of 75 minutes after which a 6 run penalty per over applies
- Maximum of 4 overs per bowler
- Men's XXXX Gold Twenty20 Cup matches will be played with a white ball and coloured clothing (shorts are no longer allowed when fielding). A red ball and cricket attire (not shorts) approved by the Grade Cricket Coordinator will apply to other grades.
- Fielding restrictions
o First 6 overs – no more than two fielders to be outside the fielding restriction circle
o Remaining overs – no more than five fielders to be outside the fielding restriction circle
- Bowling procedure – overs are bowled in 5 over blocks (ie overs 1 to 5 are bowled from one end and then overs 6 to 10 are bowled from the other end etc). At the end of each over, only the two batters and two umpires change ends. Apart from normal field position changes, the fielders only change after each 5 over block, the umpires and batters remaining at the same end.
- Free hit after a foot fault 'No ball' – the ball following a foot fault 'no ball' will be a free hit to the batter facing it. Changes to fielding positions are only permitted if a different batter is on strike for the free hit delivery.
- In the Men's XXXX Gold Twenty20 Cup competition, a team consists of 11 players.
- In the Under 19, Under 16 and Under 14 exhibition matches, a team consists of eleven or twelve players (only eleven fielders may field at one time and only eleven batters are allowed to bat).
- In women's A, B and C Grade, a team consists of 9 players (a team is all out at the fall of the eighth wicket).

Matty Overall Fundraiser...
Last Friday 5th September at 7.30 at McCracken Country Club Convention Centre a Charity Auction and Gala Dinner for some 150 paying guests raising funds for Matt Overall to travel to the West Indies to represent Australia in the Under 16’s Cricket Team.
Guest speakers included Neil Dansie and Wayne “Flipper” Phillips. Sponsors for the special cricket evening included Andersons Solicitors, Granite Island Recreation and Nature Park, Parkinson Marketing, McCracken Country Club and Dodd & Page.
A charity auction including a silent auction raised in excess of $8,000 to help pay for Matt to travel to the West Indies.
Some 17 local and Adelaide based businesses and private sponsors donated over 40 items that were auctioned on the evening at the conference centre.
Some of the highlights of the evening included 80 year old Neil Dansie entertaining guests with his imaginative and thorough recall of past and present South Australian Cricket legends including Sir Donald Bradman and Sir Les Favell.
“Flipper” Phillips, ex coach of the Redbacks had the crowd in awe and laughter at his comical recollection of his career in Australia and overseas.
Matt and his team depart for the West Indies in early November for a 3 to 4 week tour including a test and one day games.
Matt offered a special thanks to the playing and coaching staff at the Port Elliot Cricket Club and Southern Stingrays District Cricket Club who have had significance on Matt’s early development as a budding cricketer and batsman. Former team mates and coaching staff attended the event.
A further highlight of the night was a huge birthday cake made by local cricket identity “Tubby” Gorge to celebrate Matts 16th Birthday.

SDCC is spending considerable time and money improving practice wickets, oval maintenance and irrigation throughout September. Times and venues may need to be altered once we have a clearer picture as to the suitability of turf practice wickets. Most training sessions will be coordinated by Abe Moore (High Performance Coach) and Scott Heywood (Senior Coach). We advise players to commence the endurance phase of your fitness program upon receipt of this letter by undertaking two x 45-60 minute individual fitness sessions per week. While many trainings will commence with net sessions focussing on technique development, please come prepared for alternative activities. Bring both spiked and rubber soled trainers.
Please confirm receipt of this letter by contacting Scott Heywood to communicate your interest or availability for season 2008/09. (When are you first coming to practice?) Alternatively, notify me of circumstances that impact on your commitment to the coming season. (Tell me if you’re not playing.) Should you be unable to attend any preseason training, direct your apologies to Scott Heywood on 0402 049 203 to discuss your circumstances.
PLEASE arrive in time to allow yourself time to prepare so sessions can start on time! Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Regards,
Scott Heywood (Senior Coach)

Stingrays TV
Traditional cricket playing nations feature as prominent downloaders (United Kingdom, South Africa, India etc) but there has also been a raft of other intersting hotspots where videos are popular including Oman, Turkey, Iran, Brazil, Chile and Japan. Strangest of all is why the people of California U.S.A find videos featuring our own Josh Barrett so interesting??? Hundreds of Californian's have logged on in the past year to catch up on JB's cover-drive...
In Australia the demographics suggest that the audience is 89% male, between the ages of 25 and 55. World wide the ladies are far more interested than at home, accounting for almost 30% of the audience. All video's can be seen at our online sports channel at:

Winter Skills and Conditioning Training Begins
A similar program for juniors will commence shortly involving coaching staff and specialist coaches from across the club. This program will be held at Reynella East School gym. Watch the junior page (and your letterbox) for more info on this program from Junior coordinator Paul Campbell.
Finally, another group of senior players have begun a strength and conditioning program at In-shape Gym at the Noarlunga Aquatic Centre. The groups focus will be on improving core strength, range of motion, power and general endurance. This group will work for 12 weeks in the lead up to pre-season training in an attempt to kick start their seasons, and lessen the likelihood of injury during the season.

Luke Williams wins 2008 Bradman Medal
Williams, an opening batsman who scored 640 runs this year at an average of 64, is a previous winner of the Bradman Medal, having secured it in 2006.
It was an unlucky night for Sayers, however, who was relegated to runner-up after Williams was awarded votes in the last match, setting him up to win by the narrowest of margins. Sayers was also runner-up last year to Ben Hook.
Southern District’s Gary Putland polled third with 23 votes, ahead of Cullen Bailey on 20 votes.
In other awards tonight:
The Team of the Year, which is voted for by captains and coaches is (in batting order):
Luke Williams, Adelaide
Jake Brown, Kensington
Shane Deitz, Southern District
Daniel Harris, (c), Woodville
Andrew Delmont, Adelaide University
Michael Cranmer, East Torrens
Chadd Sayers, Woodville
Cullen Bailey, Sturt
Joshua McLean (wk), Adelaide
Gary Putland, Southern District
Neil Rowe, Glenelg
Oliver Thomas, Sturt
Woodville’s Dean Sayers was named Coach of the year
Grade cricket umpire of the year – Andrew Willoughby (also won last year)
Grade cricket volunteer of the year, Brenton Evans, Port Adelaide
Adelaide and Woodville jointly won the Team Award for the team which polled the most player votes in the Bradman Medal count. Both teams polled 94 votes, with West Torrens next best placed on 85.
The Fred Godson Medal for the XXXX Gold Cup Player of the Series was won by Adelaide’s Blake Lenthall on 17 votes. Lenthall scored 241 runs at 60.25 and took five wickets at 24.6. Adelaide’s Nathan Job finished on 15 votes, ahead of Tea Tree Gully’s Carl Cachopa and Kensington’s Jake Brown, who both polled 13 votes.
The C.W. Walker Memorial Trophy for most outstanding wicket-keeper was again awarded to Adelaide’s Josh McLean, following on from a win last year, and the Talbot Smith Fielding Trophy was awarded to Adelaide’s Sam Raphael.
The KC Butler Medal for the most outstanding player in the B Grade competition was won by Warrick Stanborough of Glenelg. Northern Districts' Darren Huitema won the Sid Daly Medal for the best player in the C Grade and the McLeod/Wilson Medal for the best player in D Grade was won by Srinivas Kumar of Woodville.
The Karen Rolton Medal, for the most outstanding female player in the A Grade competition was awarded to Australian player Kris Britt from Sturt. Britt, who polled 38 votes, also won the award last year. She scored 776 runs at 155.2 and took 9 wickets at 14. Tea Tree Gully's Tamara Clapton won the Lyn Fullston Medal for the best player in the B Grade competition and Sonia Mangelsen from Port Adelaide won the Carolyn Dittmar Medal for C Grade.
The indigenous medal, now known as the Vince Copley Medal, for best player of the Indigenous Carnival finished in a tie between Baden Moore, of Gerard, and Peter Thomas, of Kaurna.
The Jason Gillespie Medal, for Grade cricket’s rising star, was awarded to East Torrens’ Michael Cranmer, who represented Australia in the Under 19 World Cup, and made 351 runs at 50.14, and took 10 wickets at 19.9 for his club in just eight matches.
