Stingrays Pre-Season Training Dates

Dear Stingray,

On behalf of the coaches, captains & committee of Southern District Cricket Club I invite you to join us for pre-season training in preparation for season 2010/11. Below are the training dates prior to round 1 matches beginning in early October.

After a strong finish to last season which included the C grade premiership, 2nd place in the club championship, runners up in the B grade and narrowly missing A grade finals, we have much to prove to both ourselves and our supporters this season. With 95% of our core senior group returning this season, competition for places in teams will be fierce (as it should be!). We encourage you to attend every possible session to maximise your preparation to perform from round 1.

We are in a period of real stability at the club as we welcome back all last seasons captains including Simon Roberts (A grade); Shaun Tanner (T20); Jason Riley (B grade); Steven Kerr (C grade); Joel Ashforth (D grade) as well as coaches Dean Chambers; Emily Moran; Bob Lisle etc. Another strong sign of our strength as a club is that despite the best efforts of rival clubs to lure established and developing players away, we begin the season with our core playing group in tact.

We strongly believe our improvement this season will come from within our own ranks. Instead of aggressively recruiting off-season, we are backing our existing group to step up and perform. Being competitive is not enough this year, as a senior playing group it is time to start delivering on all of our promise and dominate our competition!

Stingray Hatchett Stars With Ball for Sussex

Lewis Hatchett boosted his hopes of landing a professional contract at Sussex with the first five-wicket haul of his career on the opening day of the Championship match against Leicestershire at Grace Road.

The 20-year-old left-arm seamer took five for 47 as Leicestershire slumped to 204 all out after being put into bat. Only Australian all-rounder Andrew McDonald coped with the bowler-friendly conditions, top-scoring with a fluent 63 that included 13 boundaries.

By the close, Division Two leaders Sussex had reached 128 for four in their reply, with Chris Nash hitting an unbeaten half-century off 67 balls.

But the day belonged to Hatchett, playing in only the second Championship game of his career and still looking to earn himself a contract having progressed through the Sussex academy.

The overcast conditions and stiff breeze blowing across the ground suited him perfectly and he claimed the first wicket of the match with a swinging delivery that trapped Will Jefferson lbw.

There was then a lengthy wait before Hatchett struck again, but when he did it was in spectacular fashion. He finished off the Leicestershire innings by taking the last four wickets for six runs in 11 balls.

Claude Henderson was bowled for 11, Nadeem Malik caught behind off the next ball while Wayne White and Matthew Hoggard both had their stumps uprooted by two more excellent deliveries.

To complete his performance Hatchett also ran out Tom New with a superb throw from square leg.

Club Curator

Club Curator John Passmore who has been the curator for the last 2 seasons has advised the club he can no longer fulfill this role as he has picked up full time work at Pultney Grammar. We congratulate John on gaining full time work and we hope in some small way we have assisted him in his development.

John will always be welcome at our club, he is a keen cricket man and we hope he can find the time to drop in and see us.With John’s exciting move the club is on the lookout for a Curator, the committee will consider a number of options available before making a decision but if you are interested or know of someone who may be interested please do not hesitate to give Justin Ifould a call on 0408 600 639.

Stingray AGM

The 2010 AGM was held on Sunday May 16. The role of the AGM is to report on the clubs seasonal activities and to elect the committee for the future year.

An important change occurred at the AGM with Russell Vincent advising that he would not be standing for President for the coming season, he has served 5 productive years as President and believed it was time to step aside. Russell has been an outstanding President and has had much impact in lifting the club’s profile, raising awareness through the general and business community and has been a driving force behind the Beyond Blue initiative FeBLUary. In your travels you may have experienced Russell’s enthusiasm and creativity for this initiative. The club wishes Russell every success in what ever he is doing and we hope to see Russell attending the club matches and functions in the future, maybe he will find time to coach!

The new President was elected and Harvey Jolly will take on this role, Harvey has been a member of the Management Committee for over 15 years and we all wish Harvey well in his new role. Justin Ifould was elected as Secretary, Rose Miller as Junior Coordinator, Paul Charman as Cricket Chairman, Jason Riley as Grounds Coordinator, Kuang Tan as SACA Delegate, David Kempe, Women’s Cricket, Sharon Rattray, Bob Lisle and Fern Nizzola will also serve on the Committee.

Unfortunately the role of treasurer was not filled and the club is on the lookout for someone who could fill that role, if you are interested contact Harvey Jolly, 0438 928 369 or Justin Ifould, 0408 600 639.

Lewis Hatchett Makes 1st Class Debut

Stingrays opening bowler Lewis Hatchett has made his first class debut for Sussex in a match against Cambridge MCCU at FP Fenner's ground. The 3 day match features a young Sussex side, with 2 other players also making their debut. Lewis has spent the previous two seasons at Southern and was the clubs leading wicket taker in 2009/10, narrowly beating Gary Putland to the club aggregate. The club congratulates Lewis and wishes him well for the remainder of the season.

Southern District AGM

The AGM will be held Sunday May 16 at 11:00 pm at Bice Oval Clubrooms. All club members are invited to attend, a sausage sizzle will be held after the AGM for members. The club annual report will also be available on the morning.

Stingrays Win C Grade Premiership

Southern District C grade are the 2009/10 premiers after rain on day 2 of the Grand Final washed out any hope of a result. Clearly the dominant side all year, the team finished well above all oponents during the regular season, only dropping one game. highlights of this game can be seen on the StingrayTV youtube channel soon...

The flip side of the equation meant that Southerns B grade side were denied the opportunity to push for a win on day 2 of their GF, with Northern District taking the flag after finishing higher on the ladder during the regular season.

Gary Putland Youth Cricket Academy

Please find below a list of players selected in the Gary Putland Youth Cricket Academy. The Southern District Cricket Club would like to thank all players that attended the trials held at Bice Oval.

The coaches were impressed by the standard of talent on display. It is the belief of the coaching staff that all players who attended showed signs that they have a future in club cricket and we would encourage all players to register their cricketing interest with their nearest cricket club.

For those players not listed we thank you for your efforts, we will be monitoring your progress at community club level in the Southern Cricket Association, Great Southern Cricket Association or the South Central Cricket Association.

Remember players mature at different rates, given time and growth there will be many more opportunities for you in the future. For those players named we will be in contact in the near future.

It is planned to conduct an information evening for parents and players to provide you with an overview of the program and expected commitments.

Grand Final Preview

Southern District will this weekend be represented by two senior teams in Grand Finals with C Grade taking on Woodville at Park 25 No. 2 and B grade playing Nothern Districts at Salisbury.

The C's made their way through to the GF thanks largely to an outstanding 99 from Nick Bowen who fell one run short chasing the final run of the match with Southern successfully chasing 210 set by West Torrens.

In the B grade a patient 69 from Scott Heywood and 65 from skipper Jason Riley saw the Stingrays post 265 on day one, and defend the total thanks to 3 wickets to Matthew Abbott and Tom Joraslafsky.

Both games commence at 1pm, and all supporters and players are invited to Bice oval Sunday evening post match to hopefully celebrate the clubs first senior flags for several years. The club will also be represented by the U16 whites team who made it through to the GF against East Torrens.

Stingrays beat rain to upset Woodville

Southern District A grade must beat XXXX Gold one-day champions Kensington and rely on East Torrens upsetting Northern Districts to gain passage to the finals. After 3 consequetive wins against Port Adelaide, East Torrens and Woodville, the Stingrays sit 5th on the premiership ladder going into the final round. Southern can finish on equal points with Glenelg if the Bays lose their final game, but the Seahorses have a superior percentage which would only change with a significant defeat.

On the weekend the Stingrays defeated back-to-back premiers Woodville to end their season. After losing Lewis Hatchett prior to the days play with a hamstring injury, and without Redback Gary Putland, the Rays Michael Delaney proved his worth with the ball collecting 5 wickets. Delaney led the attack from the front, picking up 3 vital wickets in his first spell well supported by unlikely opening partner Matthew Sugg (10 overs 0-18), and Pat Jolly (1 wicket). A partnership from Chad Sayers and Jonathon Wells swang the game back to balance after coming together at 5-50, but wickets to spinners Shaun Tanner and Simon Roberts ripped the guts out of the Woodville middle order. When Delaney clean bowled numbers 9 and 10, it appeared a Stingray victory was inevitable. However, the weather had other plans. Heavy showers forced players from the ground as players spent a frustrating 90 mins battling covers and persistant rain. When play finally recommenced at 5:30pm, Simon Roberts trapped the dangerous Wells in front for another memerable Stingray win. The game was set up the previous week by a fighting 60 from Justin Ifould, and solid 30 from Joel Garrett, but Shaun Tanners 88 swung the game back towards Southern. Tanner was at his destructive best as he built his innings early, only to flourish with the tail late in the day. Shaun was unlucky to be fired after inside edging the ball onto his pads.

In the B grade Jason Riley (64*) and Chris O'Connor (30*) saved the Stingrays from an early collapse to have the side on the cusp of victory when rain intervened. After losing openers Paul Roberts & Josh Vincent early, a steady stream on wickets reduced the Rays to 5-57. After a 110 runs partnership Riley and O'Connor had swung the game back in Southerns favour when heavy storms saw the game ending in a draw. Dean Chambers 6 wickets the previous week had set up the run chase. restricting Woodville to 210.

The C grade were also defeated by the rain after reducing Woodville to 8-189 chasing the Stringrays 269. Nick Bowen scored a timely 94 well supported by Steven Ford and Kuang Tan. Daniel Rogers survived an early onslaught on the CBHS postage stamp to claim 4 wickets.

The D grades premiership season ended with a loss to Woodville in the rain at St Clair oval. Skipper Joel Ashforth tore a hamstring in the loss and may miss this weeks vital club game against Kensington. Dave Sboro (64) and Brad Hatchett (34) were the only batters of note in a disappointing total of 190. The bowlers battled hard but could not restrict the Woodville side who passed the run 7 wickets down.

Southern go into the final round 5 points clear of Northern District on the club Championship, and 20 points ahead of 3rd place Sturt. Four wins would guarantee the club its first ever club championship, but this will be a big ask against Kensington. D grade are the only side to drop a game in the past 3 rounds, so Southern go into the round with plenty of confidence and an opportunity to write a little club history.
