4 out of 4 for Stingrays against Reds

Southern go into the bye sitting atop the club championship after four wins against East Torrens.

Missing gun quick Gary Putland, who has been on Redback duties with the T20 and Ford Ranger squads, Southern skittled the Reds for just 143 in week one (Pat Jolly and Lewis Hatchett taking 3 wickets each). Chasing, an opening knock of 64 from Justin Ifould guided Southern to the win as the Stingrays passed the score 6 wickets down. Matthew Sugg (38) and Toby Viney (31) also put runs on the board in the win. At 8/234, Southern District declared and sent the Reds into bat for a second time. The quest for outright victory started well for the Stingrays, as East Torrens lost their first 3 wickets with just 19 ruibs on the board and finished at 4/75 from 22 overs when the game was called off. The win leaves the Stingrays sitting 6th on the ladder, but the bye this weekend means the team will need to win its final 3 games to have any chance of finals action.

B grade posted their sixth consequetive win to leave them sitting atop the B grade ladder with 4 rounds to go. A strong bowling performance saw the Reds restricted to 123 with Andrew Peat (3/22) & Tom joraslafsky (4/26) the main wicket takers. Stumbling to 4/45, the Stingrays rallied to pass the score 5 down thanks to 35 from skipper Jason Riley and contributions from Josh Barrett (25) and Andrew Peat (28). Peat, who was reported with a level 1 offence after disputing his dismissal, will be available for the next round after escaping the tribunal with a warning.

C grade continued their unbeaten run for the season by chasing a modest total at CBHS. Bradley Hatchett was the backbone of the innings scoring a patient 51. Daniel Rogers proved he is no mug with the bat pairing with Hatchett to pass the total, before playing some expansive shots on his way to an unbeaten 37*. The game was set up the week before with Hatchett again the star with the ball collecting 4 wickets with his off spin.

D grade played a spiteful match against a very ordinary East Torrens side and escaped with the points to move back into finals contention. Contributions from Deon Laubscher (26); Alex Shute (30); Dave Sboro (29) and skipper Joel Ashforth (35) were the order of the day, with no batsman concentrating long enough to pass fifty. Jibber (Jarrod) McCormack was again a class above taking 3/25 off 15.1, but it was a typically misely spell from skipper Joel Ashforth with 4/20 from 17 overs who ripped the life from the opposition.

Changes to training for T20 Friendly vs Reynella

Senior training this week will switch to Tuesday/Wednesday night to allow players to support the team selected for Thursday nights friendly T20 vs Reynella cricket club. The match will feature Stingray washup and former C grade captain (not to mention Doctor Evil look-a-like) Michael Smith and many more.

U16 Junior training will not be affected by this change, and will continue as normal on Wed and Thu night.

FeBLUary Live Stand Up Comedy Night - 3 folks walk into a club...

SACA Hot Weather Announcement for Sat Jan 9th

In accordance with this Policy, we have closely monitored the weather over the past week and have reviewed the forecast conditions for tomorrow and Sunday.

The forecast for Saturday indicates that we will experience a very hot day with a maximum temperature of 41 degrees. Sunday’s forecast is significantly hotter, with an expected maximum temperature of 43 degrees.

In considering how to handle grade cricket this weekend, SACA decided to look at each grade (and day) separately. The reasoning behind this decision is due to the average age of all participants in a particular grade (players and umpires) as well as the level of off-field support in the form of volunteers and facilities (air conditioned club rooms, fridge access etc). Subsequently, SACA has decided to cancel cricket in the following grades:

• Women’s A Grade (Sunday 10 January 2010)
• Women’s B Grade (Sunday 10 January 2010)
• Men’s C Grade (Saturday 9 January 2010)
• Men’s D Grade (Saturday 9 January 2010)
• XXXX Gold One Day Cup Grade (Sunday 10 January 2010)

SACA fully understands that players in the Women’s A and B Grade and Men’s C and D Grade Competitions have been frustrated by the abandonment of matches in late November due to wet weather, however the decision to cancel cricket in these grades tomorrow due to extreme heat is made with the safety and well being of all participants in mind. The Grade Cricket Committee will consider rescheduling these matches at a meeting on 2 February 2010.

In relation to Men’s A and B Grades on Saturday, SACA believes that with the assistance of participants and clubs, it is possible to continue these grades as programmed.

SACA does not believe that it is safe for players to participate on Sunday in the XXXX Gold One Day Cup Competition as many of these players will have competed the day before. Subsequently, these matches have been cancelled and will be rescheduled to Sunday 17 January 2010. SACA will liaise with Grade Clubs next week regarding confirmation of venues.
Participants involved in Men’s A and B Grades on Saturday are reminded to properly hydrate before during and after the match, to wear appropriate clothing (hats, sunglasses etc) and regularly apply sunscreen. Clubs are reminded to manage regular drink breaks, ensure all participants (including umpires) have ongoing access to drinks by running out ‘squirt bottles’ and stocking eskies on the boundary line. Chilled fruit should be available at the tea break as well as ensuring players have access to air conditioned clubrooms where available. We ask that Clubs ensure that all participants are monitored during and after the day’s play.

2010 Training; BankSA; and Batting Relfection

Training for all senior and junior teams recommences this week after an extended Christmas/New Year break. Players selected in the BankSA squad for the tournament beginning next Monday are invited to join senior training this week, as well as attending a specialist session Wednesday night at 5pm.

The Senior teams ended 2009 with strong performances against Adelaide, only the D grade failed to record a win. This week features a one-day round against Adelaide University. This is followed by a 2-day encounter with Port Adelaide and our final XXXX Gold one-day cup match against West Torrens before the bye.

Matthew Overall is representing SA in the U17 carnival being held in Adelaide over the next 10 days and we wish him the best of luck.

finally, I have included a brief reflection of our batting over the first part of the season from club batting skills coach John Roberts. I think his words are as relevant across the club from juniors to seniors, and form the basis of our batting focus over the coming weeks. While winning games of cricket is obviously a priority, of equal importance is the continued learning and examinations of our games.

To all SDCC players,

I have seen enough of the players in the nets, and in matches, to have formed an opinion on our seasons performances so far.

A significant reason for what I consider unacceptable performances from our batting, is with few exceptions:

A glaringly obvious lack of footwork!

To compensate for poor footwork, players go hard at the ball, to their detriment.

By attending this to this deficiency, I am confident, players can be better positioned to have an improved defensive technique, and also to play better attacking shots without risk.

I believe this will instill the confidence required to successfully build an innings, without resorting to “lazy cowboy” dismissals.

This combined with the ability to concentrate for longer, will reflect on the scoreboard.

Good players make their own luck! Don't keep doing the same thing, and expecting different results.

Sugg & McCormack answer call for tons

Matthew Sugg posted his first hundred of the year in the B grade over the weekend to lead his team to a massive win over Prospect. Sugg scored his ton at a run a ball after the team stumbled to be 3-20 early. Robbie McCard chipped in with his first half century of the season to help the team post 290 at Bice oval. Prospect were never in the hunt on day 2, bowled out 120 runs in arears, with the bowlers sharing the spoils.

In the C grade Brendan McCormack posted his first club century as he and Liam Ridley made light work of the Prospect attack at Park 25. Together they put on 130 for the 3rd wicket, Ridly eventually outfoxed on 85 while McCormack continued patiently to his hundred before falling the next ball. Defending the target was never an issue as the ladder leading C's destroyed the Pirates top order for just 45 in the first dig, Jason Samarcq taking 4 wickets, and leg spinner Daniel Rodgers 3 wicket. Sent back in the opposition stumbled to 7-150 when play ended, Brad Hatchett picking up 4 2nd innings poles with his off spin.

It Was Bradley Hatchett who also starred for the D grade in their first innings on Saturday, making a controlled 93 before being unluckily run out backing up at the bowlers end. Skipper Joel Ashforth smashed a ball back to the bowler who in an attempt to get out of the way was struck on the hand, fracturing it in 2 places, and then defelcting onto the stumps. The D's put up 250 at CBHS with Alex Shute contributing 50 runs. Prospect were never in the hunt, as Jarryd McCormack lead the Stingrays with 3 wickets in their romp over the Pirates.

It was a different story at the A grade, where once again the top order failed to stand up and post a match winning score. Winning the toss on Saturday, skipper Simon Roberts sent the opposition in the knowledge he would lose Putland and Delaney the next day to state representation. The bowlers toiled away on a flat wicket, catching and fielding well to eventually bowl Prospect out for a modest 199. On day 2 Justin Ifould fell cheaply for just 6, with the captain falling the very next ball to leave the side at 2-20. Brenton Maiolo hung in and with Paul Roberts formed a partnership that looked capable of passing the total. However, neither managed to go on with their innings, falling after lunch for 52 (Maiolo) and 31 (Roberts) respectively. Shaun Tanner also showed some fight, posting 41, but also lost his wicket when the game was there to be won. DLCA import Lewis Hill fell for just 4, Scott Heywood 9, and keeper Toby Viney 13. Josh Vincent was stranded on 11 when Tom Joraslafsky and Lewis Hatchett both fell leaving the Stingrays 12 runs short of their target. This loss, and with the bye still to come, leave the A grade teams season hanging by a thread.

After 7 rounds Southern District sit 3rd on the club championship ladder. This week offers a considerable challenge as all sides face Adelaide in a 1-day game before breaking for Christmas.

Stingrays in Futures League

Gary Putland and Joel Garrett turn out this week for several T20 matches for SA in the Futures League being played in Melbourne. Joel recently returned from the U19 national carnival and Gary has been in outstanding form for the Stingrays in the grade comp taking 13 wickets in his past three outings.

Fast bowler Michael Delaney also lines up for the Canberra Comets in the same competition this week.

Putland snares five in win

Stingray quick Gary Putland captured 5 wickets to continue his sintilating start to the season. For the second consequtive game, Putts claimed five wickets to lead the stingrays to a tight 3 wicket victory over Woodville. He ripped the game open in his first four overs, and along with opening partner Lewis Hatchett, they reduced the peckers to 6-15. Hatchett and Shaun Tanner both claimed 2 wickets and Mick Delaney 1 to complete the romp, Woodville all out 85. Toby Viney returned to the 1's keeping position with two outstanding catches.

Woodville then struck early to remove both stingray openers early. Only a well compiled 22 from skipper Simon Roberts and an outstanding knock from Michael Delaney (25no) saved the stingrays who at one stage collapsed to 6-53. Delaney struck the ball with intent, playing an intelligent innings to see the Rays to victory.
