Southern District crowned Women's Twenty20 Champions
Monday 4 March 2013
The Southern District Stingrays claimed a remarkable victory over Tea Tree Gully/Northern Districts at Adelaide Oval yesterday, to earn their first Women’s A Grade Twenty20 Cup. Heading in to the game as underdogs, the young Stingrays team showed experience beyond their years against a seasoned opponent in TTG/ND.
TTG/ND won the toss and sent Southern District in to bat in hope of bowling them out for a low total. It looked to be a good decision as they claimed some early wickets to have the Stingrays in trouble at 4/24. Opener Jessica O’Reilly made a solid 22 and started to build a decent partnership with Kylie Rattray, before their partnership ended at 39 as O’Reilly was dismissed by Chloe Scheer (1/20). Rattray looked in great touch at the crease as she blasted a match winning 43* runs from 41 balls to help take the Stingrays total to an impressive 107. Jess Fiebig, Cara Fiebig, Neisha Iles and Ainslee Knight each took one wicket for TTG/ND.
In reply, TTG/ND made a decent start thanks to openers Brittany Perry (16) and Stephanie Morrison (18). But the Stingrays looked dangerous in the field, and when Rattray stumped Perry which was followed soon after by an incredible run out from Tabatha Saville, the momentum was well and truly with Southern District. The TTG/ND middle order failed to put any runs on the board thanks to some great bowling from Georgia Weatherspoon (2/9) and Jessica O’Reilly (2/3). TTG/ND was eventually dismissed for 47 and Southern District was crowned the 2012/13 Women’s A Grade Twenty20 Champions.
