Melbourne cup night at the club on Saturday night was an upbeat affair after the Stingrays secured their first 4-0 white wash of the season against Tea Tree Gully. Gary Putland, Shaun Tanner and some tight bowling from the under-rated Paul Roberts saw Southern A grade sneak home in the final over of the day for an unlikely victory. TTG Needed only 9 runs from the final 12 ball with 3 wickets in hand when it all fell apart. Putts picked up back-to-back wickets (both clean bowled) leaving 6 needed from the final over with 1 wicket in the shed. Shaun Tanner bowled the last batter for a memorable scrapping win to complete the clubs clean sweep, a complete reversal of last seasons 0-4 result.
In other grades Tom Joraslafsky took 5 in the Magoo's as Southern bowled TTG out for a comfortable first innings win. First innings points are what this competition is all about, so having secured it, the B's then declared 0-0 in the 2nd innings and narrowly lost outright, having TTG who were 7 down chasing a 130 target. With the change to the points system the B's took 15 points from the game, and surrendered 10 points in the outright loss.
C grade destroyed the Gullies at CBHS after Vinnie Nizzola reduced the bulls to 3-6 in the first 10 overs of the day. He ended with 4 wickets and leg spinner Daniel Rogers claimed 3 in his first decent spell of the summer.
D grade scored a long awaited victory at TTG after a 60 run partnership between "Lewis's Brother' Bradley Hatchett and a patient Matt Peters. The D's passed the total of 130 only 4 wickets down, and went on the recored 8-220 thanks to an unbeaten 60 from young up and comer Liam Ridley, a young lad who may have a future in the game.
Tuesday night see's T20 skipper Shaun Tanner lead the Stingrays in a match against Sturt at Bice oval before playing the blues once again in the next round.
