Welcome to Season 2011/12

On behalf of the Stingrays coaching staff, Welcome to season 2011/12! The coaches and captains have been busily preparing a pre-season schedule to help us to hit the ground running in round one. We have tweaked the format from the past two pre-seasons to include more core skills sessions, with a greater focus on skill development and strategic/decision making aspects of the game

To cut down travel commitments, we are utilising the indoor facilities at the ICA for a significant portion, with only a handful of sessions at Adelaide Oval in September in the lead up to round 1.

You will notice that pre-season sessions are designed to allow most players two core skill sessions per week for between 6-10 weeks. A player specific list for individual sessions is included with the pre-season calendar. This is a guide of who we expect will be attending these sessions.

Players can be added or removed from sessions as per their “want”, so take a moment to look at our expectations, and consider your needs and availability.

It is each players responsibility to contact me on 0419 537 998 or abe@stingrays.com.au by Sat July 30th to discuss your needs, confirm your starting date for pre-season, and “book in” your attendance at individual sessions.

As a club we are (and should be) measured by the success of our A grade side. Our opponents will be well prepared and hungry for success. We have been building towards A Grade finals for the past few years with success in the lower grades, and it is now time for our very best to fly the flag for Southern District and create some history!

Look forward to hearing from each of you,

Abe Moore

Other Stingray News
We welcome Shaun Tanner to his new role as club captain. Shaun has an important job over the pre-season in helping individual players shape their goals and team roles in each of the three formats of the game.

We also welcome Malcolm Condon to the club as a skills coach this season. Mal is a level III coach, who previously coached University CC after a successful playing career in the Sydney grade comp. More recently he has been involved at Sheidow Park CC. We are also pleased to announce that Bob Lisle, John Roberts, Dean Chambers, Emily Moran and Harvey Jolly will also continue be involved during various stages of the pre-season program.
We will be welcoming a number of new and returning players to the club this season, with more news on this to follow in the coming weeks.

Congratulations to Matthew Overall (U19) and Tom Cotter-Gillies/Rhys Barrett (U17’s) on their selections in SACA youth teams this season.

Congratulations also to Gary Putland who has been drafted into the Adelaide Strikers team for the upcoming Big Bash League. It is a plus that we can continue to support Putts playing in the local side. We look forward to seeing more of Gary following new Redbacks coach Darren Berry’s initiative to support grade clubs.

Matthew Sugg, Patrick Jolly, Josh Barrett and Steven Ford all return mid-late September following seasons in England. Suggy in particular has been dominating the Poms, leading his league in both average and aggregate. The boys enjoyed an ANZAC day trip to Turkey for the Anzac Cove Dawn Service.

There have been a number of changes for the upcoming season including:
-       * A return to 3 separate competitions in the A grade (no double points games)
-      *  A top 8 elimination finals series for the XXXX one-day competition.
-      *  Returning to first class playing hours for A grade (11am start) and 96 overs in a day. B grade revert to an 11:30am start with 90 over days.
-       *Removal of T20 matches for B/C/D grade from the competition.
-      *  A grade round 1 will be a Sat/Sun match (date TBC)

The club has a new mobile app for iPhone/iPod touch and Android smartphones. Coupled with the new MyCricket app, players and supporters should be able to better keep up to date with news, results, ladders etc. Search for SDCC or stingrays cricket at the app store.

While the club has welcomed many new faces to the committee this season including Bob Bache and Richard Ridley, we still need volunteers for vital game day roles including scoring & managing. If you are keen to help in any of these roles in any grade, please let us know!

More news to come soon…

Jack Taylor Stars in T20 Debut

Jack Taylor has produced a man-of-the-match performance in his T20 debut for Gloucestershire. Jack outshone Muttiah Muralitharan (1-20) by taking 4-16 including the key wicket of Kieron Pollard. He then smashed 7 boundaries on his way to 38 from 28 balls. Jack had also made his List A debut earlier in the season against Somerset.

Jack spent the 2010/11 season at Southern District as part of the DLCA after University CC withdrew their offer to host him. Jack went on to have the KC Butler medal for the competitions best B grade player wrapped up at Christmas, before propelling the Stingrays into the XXXX One-day cup finals with explosive performances against East Torrens and Glenelg.

The club congratulates Jack on his Debut, and wishes him well for the remainder of the season.
