Sugg & McCormack answer call for tons

Matthew Sugg posted his first hundred of the year in the B grade over the weekend to lead his team to a massive win over Prospect. Sugg scored his ton at a run a ball after the team stumbled to be 3-20 early. Robbie McCard chipped in with his first half century of the season to help the team post 290 at Bice oval. Prospect were never in the hunt on day 2, bowled out 120 runs in arears, with the bowlers sharing the spoils.

In the C grade Brendan McCormack posted his first club century as he and Liam Ridley made light work of the Prospect attack at Park 25. Together they put on 130 for the 3rd wicket, Ridly eventually outfoxed on 85 while McCormack continued patiently to his hundred before falling the next ball. Defending the target was never an issue as the ladder leading C's destroyed the Pirates top order for just 45 in the first dig, Jason Samarcq taking 4 wickets, and leg spinner Daniel Rodgers 3 wicket. Sent back in the opposition stumbled to 7-150 when play ended, Brad Hatchett picking up 4 2nd innings poles with his off spin.

It Was Bradley Hatchett who also starred for the D grade in their first innings on Saturday, making a controlled 93 before being unluckily run out backing up at the bowlers end. Skipper Joel Ashforth smashed a ball back to the bowler who in an attempt to get out of the way was struck on the hand, fracturing it in 2 places, and then defelcting onto the stumps. The D's put up 250 at CBHS with Alex Shute contributing 50 runs. Prospect were never in the hunt, as Jarryd McCormack lead the Stingrays with 3 wickets in their romp over the Pirates.

It was a different story at the A grade, where once again the top order failed to stand up and post a match winning score. Winning the toss on Saturday, skipper Simon Roberts sent the opposition in the knowledge he would lose Putland and Delaney the next day to state representation. The bowlers toiled away on a flat wicket, catching and fielding well to eventually bowl Prospect out for a modest 199. On day 2 Justin Ifould fell cheaply for just 6, with the captain falling the very next ball to leave the side at 2-20. Brenton Maiolo hung in and with Paul Roberts formed a partnership that looked capable of passing the total. However, neither managed to go on with their innings, falling after lunch for 52 (Maiolo) and 31 (Roberts) respectively. Shaun Tanner also showed some fight, posting 41, but also lost his wicket when the game was there to be won. DLCA import Lewis Hill fell for just 4, Scott Heywood 9, and keeper Toby Viney 13. Josh Vincent was stranded on 11 when Tom Joraslafsky and Lewis Hatchett both fell leaving the Stingrays 12 runs short of their target. This loss, and with the bye still to come, leave the A grade teams season hanging by a thread.

After 7 rounds Southern District sit 3rd on the club championship ladder. This week offers a considerable challenge as all sides face Adelaide in a 1-day game before breaking for Christmas.

Putland snares five in win

Stingray quick Gary Putland captured 5 wickets to continue his sintilating start to the season. For the second consequtive game, Putts claimed five wickets to lead the stingrays to a tight 3 wicket victory over Woodville. He ripped the game open in his first four overs, and along with opening partner Lewis Hatchett, they reduced the peckers to 6-15. Hatchett and Shaun Tanner both claimed 2 wickets and Mick Delaney 1 to complete the romp, Woodville all out 85. Toby Viney returned to the 1's keeping position with two outstanding catches.

Woodville then struck early to remove both stingray openers early. Only a well compiled 22 from skipper Simon Roberts and an outstanding knock from Michael Delaney (25no) saved the stingrays who at one stage collapsed to 6-53. Delaney struck the ball with intent, playing an intelligent innings to see the Rays to victory.

Results & Weather go Stingrays way...

After losing the toss and being asked to field in 41deg heat in week one of the match against Sturt, the weather did a 180deg switch when persistent rain ended any chance of a result before play could comence. Chasing 290 for victory, SDCC were robbed of an opportunity to push for victory against the ladder leaders.

In the B grade, Sturt were cruising towards victory at 2-137 (chasing a paltry 196 at Bice Oval) when a brain fade from the Sturt Captain kicked off an embarrasing collapse that saw Sturt loose 8 for 40 in the final session. Sturt were without an answer to form spinner Tom Joraslafsky, who destroyed the blues middle order on a wicket offering turn and bounce, claiming 5-33 off 23 overs. Outstanding catches from short leg Danny Irvine and keeper Toby Viney further inspired the Stingray magoo's, who have now squared their season ledger at 2-2.

The C grade never got on ground at the uncovered Unley oval, sharing the points to remain unbeaten this season.

In the Ds at CBHS inspirational skipper Joel Ashforth rallied his team to their 2nd win of the season, with Blake Trigg and batting prodigy Stephen Wheatland knocking off the 15 runs they required for victory in trying conditions. The win was set up last week by a Jarrod McCormack hatrick and a Courtney Bain 5 for.

T20 skipper Shaun Tanner leads the Stingrays in an encounter at Glenelg on Tuesday night. All other grades will train as normal at Bice Oval from 5:30pm.

Hill Stars as Stingrays Survive Tait Onslaught

SDCC recorded a hard fought win against Sturt in it's 2nd round XXXX Gold T20 match on Tuesday night. Despite Shaun Tait ripping the guts out of the top order and returning to clean up the tail (5 wickets), the Stingrays were able to post a competitive total of 160. This was thanks largely to a swashbuckling 60 from DLCA import Lewis Hill who cleared the boundary 4 times in an impressive knock. Together with Matt Sugg the pair put on over 100 runs in what is a club record in T20 matches.

Sturt were well restricted early by some tight bowling from Gary Putland and Lewis Hamilton (F1 racing legend) who struck early, reducing Sturt to 3-10. The Blues fought back hard and some electric hitting from their middle order had them well in the game with 5 over to go. As the flood lights came on at Stingray Park the job became very difficult for the batters, who eventually succumbed by 7 runs.

Next Tuesday is the Legends Round with Sturt once again taking on a team of former guns from the Stingrays, lead by Brian Kerr.

TTG 4-0 Whitewash and Melbourne Cup Night

Melbourne cup night at the club on Saturday night was an upbeat affair after the Stingrays secured their first 4-0 white wash of the season against Tea Tree Gully. Gary Putland, Shaun Tanner and some tight bowling from the under-rated Paul Roberts saw Southern A grade sneak home in the final over of the day for an unlikely victory. TTG Needed only 9 runs from the final 12 ball with 3 wickets in hand when it all fell apart. Putts picked up back-to-back wickets (both clean bowled) leaving 6 needed from the final over with 1 wicket in the shed. Shaun Tanner bowled the last batter for a memorable scrapping win to complete the clubs clean sweep, a complete reversal of last seasons 0-4 result.

In other grades Tom Joraslafsky took 5 in the Magoo's as Southern bowled TTG out for a comfortable first innings win. First innings points are what this competition is all about, so having secured it, the B's then declared 0-0 in the 2nd innings and narrowly lost outright, having TTG who were 7 down chasing a 130 target. With the change to the points system the B's took 15 points from the game, and surrendered 10 points in the outright loss.

C grade destroyed the Gullies at CBHS after Vinnie Nizzola reduced the bulls to 3-6 in the first 10 overs of the day. He ended with 4 wickets and leg spinner Daniel Rogers claimed 3 in his first decent spell of the summer.

D grade scored a long awaited victory at TTG after a 60 run partnership between "Lewis's Brother' Bradley Hatchett and a patient Matt Peters. The D's passed the total of 130 only 4 wickets down, and went on the recored 8-220 thanks to an unbeaten 60 from young up and comer Liam Ridley, a young lad who may have a future in the game.

Tuesday night see's T20 skipper Shaun Tanner lead the Stingrays in a match against Sturt at Bice oval before playing the blues once again in the next round.

Weekend Senior Results

On Saturday, Southern District had a strong day with the bat in their rain affected match against Glenelg at Park 25. With the match reduced to 50 overs, an opening partnership of 106 runs (Brenton Maiolo 55 and Justin Ifould 63) saw the Stingrays into a good position. Further contributions from Shaun Tanner (49) and Paul Roberts (27) saw Southern close their innings at 5/262. Craig Dand (2/39) was the only Seahorse to take multiple wickets. Glenelg started their run chase well, but losing both openers thanks to run outs saw the Seahorses slump to be all out for 196. Shaun Tanner followed up his good day with the bat by taking 4/20. (report sourced from SACA interactive website)

James Smith showed that he is very much one of the form batsmen in the competition on Sunday in the first XXXX Gold Twenty20 round match. Smith plundered the Stingray attack to all parts on his way to scoring 99. He was eventually dismissed in the final over by Lewis Hatchett while attempting to bring up 3 figures. The Stingrays, Lead by Shaun Tanner as captain for the first time, were never really in the hunt, losing wickets at regular intervals during the chase. Brenton Maiolo topped scored with 26 and Josh Barrett was unbeaten on 20 as the stingrays were bowled out 43 runs short of the 168 run target.

Highlights of this game can be seen on the StingrayTV channel by clicking the button in the side browser.

Earlier in the day BankSA coach Lewis Hatchett coached his charges to a 3 run victory over WT in their U18 exhibition match. Earlier in the day BankSA coach Lewis Hatchett coached his charges to a 3 run victory over WT in their U18 exhibition match. Tight bowling from skipper Tom Joraslafsky, Matt Abbott and Dean Millar at the death saw the young Stingrays sneak home.

In other grades, the B's were unable to chase an outright result in their loss to the Bays after rain intervened. The C grade, featuring DLCA import Lewis Hill turning out for the first time, smashed Glenelg by bowling them out for just 42. Matt Abbott took 4 wickets to go with his well compiled 35 runs. The D grade were never really in the match at CBHS, set a chase of 212 to win, a lack of discipline saw them bowled out just before a storm washed out procedings. The only highlights after a poor fielding display last week were Cory McIvors 4 wickets and the senior debut of young bat Jack Clarke.

This weeks round is against Tea Tree Gully who whitewashed the Stingrays 4-0 in the same encounter last year, an effort the senior grades will be wanting to make amends for.

A grade Wrap - Messenger Sport

THANKS FOR THE TON, COSSIE - BUT WHO’S GOING TO REPLACE HIM?

MARK Cosgrove stepped straight in for Northern Districts on Saturday, smashed 100 and led them to an impressive win over Southern District a Bice Oval.
Chasing the Stingrays’ modest target of 161, the Jets went about getting some batting practice and finished the day 9/295.
Coach Russell Thompson said Cosgrove’s innings was outstanding.

``He blew the game apart,’’ Thompson said.
``The outfield was considerably better than the week before but the way he played and took it to their bowlers put us on the front foot.’’

Most of the Jets’ batsmen got their eye in with Cam Francis making 33, Ben Wright (26), Andrew Frick (43) and Chris Duval (38).
``I thought we bowled and fielded terrific last week then for everyone to chip in around Mark (Cosgrove) was good. They all got a hit under their belt,’’ Thompson said.

The Jets face a resurgent Port Adelaide this weekend that is coming off an impressive win over Kensington.
``They looked like they played all right. They beat Kensy and have a couple of new players in their side,’’ Thompson said.
``After a good win for them it’s important we keep going as well.’’

Northern Districts may be without Cosgrove and Duval due to state commitments this weekend but Thompson has plenty of players to call on.
``Kirk Pascoe was named but didn’t play and Trent Burge made 60 odd in B Grade,’’ Thompson said.
``Merv Westfield arrives from England and may be ready to play and we’ve got a stack of young bowlers waiting for their chance as well.’’

Lewis Hatchett was the best of the Southern District bowlers with 3-32 while Canberra recruit Michael Delaney and Robert McCard both took two wickets.
``I think Cossie was the difference between the two sides,’’ Southern Districts coach Abe Moore said.
``They had the better of the conditions but he (Cosgrove) was very good.’’

The Stingrays hit back on Sunday by downing Adelaide in their one-day clash, handing Moore his first win as coach of the club.
Shaun Tanner and Simon Roberts both made half centuries.
``It’s good for everyone’s confidence going forward,’’ Moore said.

BULLS CRUMBLE WITH THE BAT
TEA Tree Gully coach Peter Sleep said his players would spend a ``lot more’’ time in the nets this week as they look to bounce back from a disastrous start to the Grade Cricket season on Saturday.
The Bulls were skittled for just 82 in reply to University’s 175 at Uni Oval.
``We need to work very, very hard on our batting,’’ Sleep said.
``The batting deck was really good, better than last week.
``I was very happy with the way we bowled but it was a poor batting effort by everyone really.’’
Sleep said after a big pre-season he was surprised by the way his team crumbled.
``No excuses whatsoever, we’ve done all the right things, trained very hard,’’ he said.
``They had (Alan) Wise and (Dan) Christian, both state bowlers, and you could say it’s the first game of the season, but that’s no excuse.’’
Wise went on a wicket-taking rampage, dismissing Tea Tree Gully’s first three batsmen for a combined total of 12 runs.
The Bulls slumped to 5/17 and only Tim Davey (34) and Scott Gillies (18) showed any promise.
Wise finished with 7/32 and Christian 3/29 before the Blacks returned to the crease for a second innings.
For a moment they looked like suffering their own batting collapse when they were 2/4 but Andy Delmont steadied things with 52 before the side was all out for 125.
Scott Strangio and Jake Haberfield both found form with the ball for the Bulls with three wickets.

VINTAGE BRADBROOK FAILS TO GET REDS OVER THE LINE
A VINTAGE knock from Craig Bradbrook wasn’t enough to lift East Torrens to victory in its Grade Cricket season opener against Glenelg on the weekend.
Chasing a challenging 301 at Campbelltown Oval, the Reds made a good start with openers Chris Adams (35) and Ben Schlicker (47) putting on 81 for the first wicket.
Bradbrook came in at 2/87 and played a near match-winning innings before being dismissed for 67.
``He played beautifully and did a really good job,’’ East Torrens coach Greg Quinn said.
``He batted down the order and came in and played really sensibly.’’
Mark Eichler added a handy 35 batting at No.9 but East Torrens lost wickets at crucial times to leave them 42 runs short, all out for 259.
``We were right up with the run rate and matched them,’’ Quinn said.
``We just lost a couple of wickets along the way, one before and straight after lunch which put us on the back foot.’’
Quinn said he was pleased with his team’s effort but it didn’t change the fact it was still a loss.
``We batted all the way down and that’s what we’re looking for this year.
``Things went to plan, but we were knocked off by 40 and that’s still a loss unfortunately.’’
Neil Rowe was the pick of Glenelg’s bowlers with 5/69, including the key wicket of Bradbrook caught and bowled.

TOP ORDER FIRES FOR STURT
STURT’S top order fired and led it to victory over Adelaide in Saturday’s Grade Cricket season opener.
The Blues’ top four batsmen all made starts Jason Borgas (28), Brad Davis (24), Cam Borgas (39) and Tom Moffatt (35) and a well-timed 52 to Oswald-Jacobs at No.6 helped the side to 207 in reply to Adelaide’s 148.
Nathan Job was outstanding for the Buffalos with 4/32 from his 17 overs while Dan Cullen and Sam Williams both took two wickets.

BRAVE PROSPECT FAILS TO ‘NAIL IT’
WEST Torrens took the points but Prospect was far from disgraced in their Grade Cricket season opener on Saturday.
Chasing 278, the Pirates were in deep trouble at 2/10 but gutsy knocks from Ben Wyman (63) and Peter Brown (72) put the side back on track.
At 6/197 Prospect still looked in the game but the tail crumbled to be all out for 219.
Nick Lopez was the other Prospect batsman to make any score of note, finishing with 37, but the load was left to too few.
Former Redback Trent Kelly made a welcome return to the West Torrens side with 3/44 while David Bourn and James Smith both finished with two wickets.
``They (Prospect) played really well. But they had two huge partnerships and the game of cricket doesn’t go on like that,’’ West Torrens coach Grant Wyman said.
``So the momentum was going to turn at some stage when they lost a couple of wickets we got ourselves out of a bit of a hole.’’
Wyman said the efforts of Bourn and Smith with the ball helped secure victory.
``David bowled well when it was crucial for us, when we had to keep it tight, and Smithy was a partnership breaker,’’ he said.

Delaney snares bag - Trigg out injured

Stingray recruit Mick Delaney has fought back from a poor start in the Futures League match in QLD. Mick took 5-91 in the first innings, an excellent return considering he had 0-38 from his first 4 overs on day one.

At park 25 SA are being put to the sword by Victoria after they posted a disappointing total of 231 (Garrett 71, Ludeman 50). Just after lunch the Vics had already passed the 300 mark only 3 down.

In other news young allrounder Blake Trigg has suffered an unfortunate freak accident at training when he fell awkwardly over a bag and fractured his ankle. Blake is expected to miss 6-8 weeks and will probably look at a post Christmas return.

Jolly Family Cup - Day 1

Southern District and Northern District players, members and supporters joined together yesterday for a fitting tribute to celebrate the contribution of Bruce Jolly OAM to cricket. Presidents from both clubs spoke and a minutes silence was held prior to the round one clash between the clubs vying for the Jolly Family Cup.

Northerns won a toss both captains were happy to loose, and elected to field on a slow, low wicket at Bice Oval. While the pitch offered little assistance to the quicks, scoring was made difficult by an equally unforgiving outfield. Both clubs played patient cricket and waited for opportunity to present.

Southern were seemingly on top at 2 for 120 thanks to contributions of 22 from Brenton Maiolo, 42 from Joel Garrett and 47 from skipper Simon Roberts before a middle order collapse saw 5 wickets fall for just 4 runs. From 7/124 the Stingrays scrambled to 9/161 at the completion of 90 overs thanks to a positive partnership from allrounders Robbie McCard (20) and Shaun Tanner (12).

Both clubs would feel they are in a position to push for the points next week as both welcome Redbacks players to bolster their respective sides.

Jolly Family Cup - Tribute to Bruce Jolly

This weekends round 1 match against Northern District marks the first Jolly Family Cup encounter since the passing of OAM Bruce Jolly. The Jolly cup commemorates the great service and dedication to cricket made by the Jolly family. Players, officials and spectators will mark the occasion with a minutes silence prior to the game.

Bruce Jolly was featured in an edition of the Salisbury Aware magazine in 2007. Below is an extract of that interview.

At 14 years old, Bruce Jolly had no idea that he would still be having a love affair with the game of cricket, but 60 years on, he has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his commitment to the sport, received an award for his service to cricket and is now an honorary member of the South Australian Cricket Association.

He may be 74 years old but that doesn’t stop Bruce from leading an active sporting life at the Northern District Cricket Club based at Salisbury Oval. “I started playing cricket when I was 14, and was a bit of an all-rounder,” explains Bruce. “I lived in the country and if you didn’t play cricket, football or tennis, there was nothing
else to do with your time!” Bruce played cricket for Adelaide Turf Cricket Association and has been heavily involved with local cricket since he moved to the area, playing recreational cricket at Salisbury Cricket Club (now Northern District Cricket Club). He is also the former chairman of the club, a position he held for 24 years.

“I really enjoyed playing cricket, and I still have a passion for the game. My son works at Adelaide Oval and my entire family has been involved with sport and I must take this opportunity to thank them for their support, particularly my wife Judy. I’m still a delegate for the South Australian Cricket Association and am the administrator at the Northern District Cricket Club.”

Bruce spends much of his free time at the cricket club, helping to look after the maintenance of the grounds, and involving himself with the sport wherever he can. The rest of his spare time is spent attending cricket matches at Adelaide Oval where he is an honorary member of the South Australian Cricket Association.

“I love watching cricket, whether it’s a big Test match, or a local side. The buzz is still the same for me and it’s a thrill to see young people you know, doing well in the sport they love.” At Northern District Cricket Club, Bruce watches closely on upcoming talents. The club already has a history of producing state and international players, including Darren Lehmann, Graham Manou, Ryan Harris and Mark Cosgrove with the Redbacks. Former representatives are Rick Darling, Glen Bishop, Wayne Prior, Harvey Jolly and Barry Causby.

“We have about 200 members, including women, at the club, and I chair the sub-committee of the women’s team. The club, which amalgamated with Elizabeth ten years ago, is doing really well. We have 11 sides and at least eight of those will make finals.”

Recently the club celebrated success with four of their under 17 players who won the South Australian Cricket Championship and there are also four members who play for the Redbacks. “Through the 1970s and 1980s, Salisbury Cricket Club was very successful, winning eight premiership titles. It has been great to be involved with the club for such a long time and by mixing with the younger players it keeps me young!” Bruce is a life member of Para District Cricket Association, Northern District Cricket Club, Central District Football Association and Central United Football Club, having also played football and umpired matches.

Grade Cricket Preview

Southern District has recruited an opening bowler from Canberra Comets, Michael Delaney, who is here on a SACA scholarship. The 21-year-old missed a large part of last season with a knee injury but is determined to make an impression in SA. ``I’ve been training a bit with the Redbacks,’’ he said. ``My main aim is to improve my cricket. I’d love to get a (state) contract, but I want to be more consistent.’’

Kensington captain Jake Brown is determined to lead the Browns to the Grade Cricket title this season after being cut from the Redbacks’ rookie list. The 23-year-old all-rounder said he took his axing ``very hard’’ but returned from three months playing with Ribblesdale in England with a positive attitude.

``Of course, I took it very hard but there’s no point whingeing and crying about it. You’ve got to get on with it and the only thing I can control is my performances this season.

``It was really good to go away and get away from the pressures and talk about contracts and the state squad.

``But the number one goal for me becomes Kensington and the success of our A Grade side, so I’m looking forward to hopefully going two steps further this season.’’

Brown managed two Sheffield Shield games last season where he made 37 runs.

At Northern Districts, skipper Andrew Frick said there had been ``massive determination’’ at pre-season training after losing the Grand Final to Woodville last year. Frick will be hoping to back up from last year’s impressive season in which he was runner-up in the Bradman Medal, but said his main focus was on the team.

``If I only take five wickets this year and make five runs but we win the Grand Final, I’d much prefer that.’’

The Jets will be boosted by the return of Chris Duval who is on the Redbacks list after a stint in Tasmania.

``He’s a good Northern Districts lad and he’ll add a lot when he’s available,’’ Frick said.

``Hopefully for his sake, he’s not around, but we’d love to have him every week and add another opening bowler to our line up.’’

Sturt hopes to have Redbacks speedster Shaun Tait for most of the season.

``I’ve spoken to him and he’s keen,’’ coach Peter Judd said.
`
`He loves playing for Sturt but he’s usually told he can’t play or he’s injured.

``From what I understand he won’t be playing any four-day cricket for South Australia so we’re expecting he’d be available to play more days of cricket for Sturt than the last three years.

``I think that’s been one game a year for the last three.’’

Paceman Trent Kelly has returned from a two-year stint in WA to spearhead West Torrens’ bowling attack this summer. The 25-year-old former Redback last played for the Eagles in the 2006/07 winning Grand Final and is hoping to lead the club back to the Grade Cricket finals. He has spent the past two years with the WA Warriors, working with top-class coaches, Dennis Lillee, Tom Moody, Bruce Reid and Trevor Penny. But after losing his contract this season, Kelly returned to Adelaide and is determined to have another crack at First Class cricket.

``I see it as an opportunity for myself to perform well in Grade Cricket and hopefully search for higher honours,’’ he said.
`
`I’ve certainly set individual and team goals for West Torrens, and if I do all the right things and work hard on my game ...’’

Fitness should not be an issue for Kelly who played football with Henley Sharks - including the losing Grand Final to Goodwood - over winter. Now he can’t wait to take the new ball against Prospect in Round One this Saturday.

``We’ve had really good numbers and with the group of players we’ve got, we’re certainly looking to do big things.’’

Eagles coach Grant Wyman said Kelly, ``in the prime of his life’’, would be a major asset to the team with his enthusiasm and leadership.

Meanwhile reigning premier Woodville looks well placed to push for its third Grade Cricket title in a row by adding Tasmanian Joel Boucher and keeping the rest of its team in-tact. But it will be sweating on the fitness of all-rounder Chadd Sayers who faces a race against time to recover from an arm injury for Round Two.
And the talented Ken Skewes may miss the first month of the season with a finger injury.

Port Adelaide is hoping Victorian recruits Joel Davies and Tim Ludeman will help lead them back to the Grade Cricket finals this season.
Davies, 21, won Geelong’s best-and-fairest award last season after what he described as a ``consistent summer’’ but ``without anything major’’.
He batted at No.3 for Geelong that finished fifth in Victoria’s Premier Cricket competition. Davies said given the log-jam of players pushing for state selection in Victoria, he decided to cross the border and try his luck in SA.

``In Victoria they’re very strong at state level and I was looking for an opportunity in SA,’’ he said.

``I’d be disappointed down the track if I didn’t give it a crack over here.

``Port (Adelaide) got in touch with me, I had a chat with Mark Sorell (Redbacks coach) and SA seemed like a good fit.’’

Davies arrived in Adelaide in July and after three months of training, is itching to start the season.

``I can’t wait, it feels like it’s been almost a year since I’ve played,’’ he said.

Fellow Victorian, Ludeman, received a rookie contract with the Redbacks after a stellar season with Carlton. The 22-year-old was named Premier Cricket’s wicket-keeper of the year after finishing with 51 dismissals.

Tea Tree Gully will rely on an even contribution from its young squad as it strives to climb in to the Grade Cricket top four this season, new captain Adam Mossop says. Mossop, who replaces Ben Cameron as skipper in the two-day format, said the Bulls had added a couple of new players to its squad, including former East Torrens bowler Scott Strangio and Kensington all-rounder Scott Gillies.

``Scott Strangio played at Gepps Cross last year but he was in the grade cricket team of the year only a few years ago,’’ Mossop said.

``He’ll add a bit of variety to our bowling line-up because we haven’t had a left arm opener that can swing it. ``Scott Gillies will add depth to our batting and can also bowl when required.

``We need to improve in all areas, we’ve got a very young team so we’ll need everyone contributing rather than just a couple of guys doing everything.’’

Adelaide University has also added a Canberra recruit in Tom Thornton, but loses former Redbacks skipper Nathan Adcock to retirement.

Glenelg will field a new bowling attack after losing its three best bowlers from last season. Jason Donnelly has returned to New Zealand after receiving a First Class contract, Steven Rowe has moved to the UK with his wife and Shae Stuivenberg is expected to be sidelined with shin splints.

Draw for Round One, October 3/10:
Southern District v Northern Districts; Adelaide v Sturt; University v Tea Tree Gully; East Torrens v Glenelg; Port Adelaide v Kensington; Prospect v West Torrens, Woodville - bye.
