Jolly Family Cup - Tribute to Bruce Jolly

This weekends round 1 match against Northern District marks the first Jolly Family Cup encounter since the passing of OAM Bruce Jolly. The Jolly cup commemorates the great service and dedication to cricket made by the Jolly family. Players, officials and spectators will mark the occasion with a minutes silence prior to the game.

Bruce Jolly was featured in an edition of the Salisbury Aware magazine in 2007. Below is an extract of that interview.

_________

At 14 years old, Bruce Jolly had no idea that he would still be having a love affair with the game of cricket, but 60 years on, he has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his commitment to the sport, received an award for his service to cricket and is now an honorary member of the South Australian Cricket Association.

He may be 74 years old but that doesn’t stop Bruce from leading an active sporting life at the Northern District Cricket Club based at Salisbury Oval. “I started playing cricket when I was 14, and was a bit of an all-rounder,” explains Bruce. “I lived in the country and if you didn’t play cricket, football or tennis, there was nothing
else to do with your time!” Bruce played cricket for Adelaide Turf Cricket Association and has been heavily involved with local cricket since he moved to the area, playing recreational cricket at Salisbury Cricket Club (now Northern District Cricket Club). He is also the former chairman of the club, a position he held for 24 years.

“I really enjoyed playing cricket, and I still have a passion for the game. My son works at Adelaide Oval and my entire family has been involved with sport and I must take this opportunity to thank them for their support, particularly my wife Judy. I’m still a delegate for the South Australian Cricket Association and am the administrator at the Northern District Cricket Club.”

Bruce spends much of his free time at the cricket club, helping to look after the maintenance of the grounds, and involving himself with the sport wherever he can. The rest of his spare time is spent attending cricket matches at Adelaide Oval where he is an honorary member of the South Australian Cricket Association.

“I love watching cricket, whether it’s a big Test match, or a local side. The buzz is still the same for me and it’s a thrill to see young people you know, doing well in the sport they love.” At Northern District Cricket Club, Bruce watches closely on upcoming talents. The club already has a history of producing state and international players, including Darren Lehmann, Graham Manou, Ryan Harris and Mark Cosgrove with the Redbacks. Former representatives are Rick Darling, Glen Bishop, Wayne Prior, Harvey Jolly and Barry Causby.

“We have about 200 members, including women, at the club, and I chair the sub-committee of the women’s team. The club, which amalgamated with Elizabeth ten years ago, is doing really well. We have 11 sides and at least eight of those will make finals.”

Recently the club celebrated success with four of their under 17 players who won the South Australian Cricket Championship and there are also four members who play for the Redbacks. “Through the 1970s and 1980s, Salisbury Cricket Club was very successful, winning eight premiership titles. It has been great to be involved with the club for such a long time and by mixing with the younger players it keeps me young!” Bruce is a life member of Para District Cricket Association, Northern District Cricket Club, Central District Football Association and Central United Football Club, having also played football and umpired matches.

Grade Cricket Preview

Southern District has recruited an opening bowler from Canberra Comets, Michael Delaney, who is here on a SACA scholarship. The 21-year-old missed a large part of last season with a knee injury but is determined to make an impression in SA. ``I’ve been training a bit with the Redbacks,’’ he said. ``My main aim is to improve my cricket. I’d love to get a (state) contract, but I want to be more consistent.’’

Kensington captain Jake Brown is determined to lead the Browns to the Grade Cricket title this season after being cut from the Redbacks’ rookie list. The 23-year-old all-rounder said he took his axing ``very hard’’ but returned from three months playing with Ribblesdale in England with a positive attitude.

``Of course, I took it very hard but there’s no point whingeing and crying about it. You’ve got to get on with it and the only thing I can control is my performances this season.

``It was really good to go away and get away from the pressures and talk about contracts and the state squad.

``But the number one goal for me becomes Kensington and the success of our A Grade side, so I’m looking forward to hopefully going two steps further this season.’’

Brown managed two Sheffield Shield games last season where he made 37 runs.

At Northern Districts, skipper Andrew Frick said there had been ``massive determination’’ at pre-season training after losing the Grand Final to Woodville last year. Frick will be hoping to back up from last year’s impressive season in which he was runner-up in the Bradman Medal, but said his main focus was on the team.

``If I only take five wickets this year and make five runs but we win the Grand Final, I’d much prefer that.’’

The Jets will be boosted by the return of Chris Duval who is on the Redbacks list after a stint in Tasmania.

``He’s a good Northern Districts lad and he’ll add a lot when he’s available,’’ Frick said.

``Hopefully for his sake, he’s not around, but we’d love to have him every week and add another opening bowler to our line up.’’

Sturt hopes to have Redbacks speedster Shaun Tait for most of the season.

``I’ve spoken to him and he’s keen,’’ coach Peter Judd said.
`
`He loves playing for Sturt but he’s usually told he can’t play or he’s injured.

``From what I understand he won’t be playing any four-day cricket for South Australia so we’re expecting he’d be available to play more days of cricket for Sturt than the last three years.

``I think that’s been one game a year for the last three.’’

Paceman Trent Kelly has returned from a two-year stint in WA to spearhead West Torrens’ bowling attack this summer. The 25-year-old former Redback last played for the Eagles in the 2006/07 winning Grand Final and is hoping to lead the club back to the Grade Cricket finals. He has spent the past two years with the WA Warriors, working with top-class coaches, Dennis Lillee, Tom Moody, Bruce Reid and Trevor Penny. But after losing his contract this season, Kelly returned to Adelaide and is determined to have another crack at First Class cricket.

``I see it as an opportunity for myself to perform well in Grade Cricket and hopefully search for higher honours,’’ he said.
`
`I’ve certainly set individual and team goals for West Torrens, and if I do all the right things and work hard on my game ...’’

Fitness should not be an issue for Kelly who played football with Henley Sharks - including the losing Grand Final to Goodwood - over winter. Now he can’t wait to take the new ball against Prospect in Round One this Saturday.

``We’ve had really good numbers and with the group of players we’ve got, we’re certainly looking to do big things.’’

Eagles coach Grant Wyman said Kelly, ``in the prime of his life’’, would be a major asset to the team with his enthusiasm and leadership.

Meanwhile reigning premier Woodville looks well placed to push for its third Grade Cricket title in a row by adding Tasmanian Joel Boucher and keeping the rest of its team in-tact. But it will be sweating on the fitness of all-rounder Chadd Sayers who faces a race against time to recover from an arm injury for Round Two.
And the talented Ken Skewes may miss the first month of the season with a finger injury.

Port Adelaide is hoping Victorian recruits Joel Davies and Tim Ludeman will help lead them back to the Grade Cricket finals this season.
Davies, 21, won Geelong’s best-and-fairest award last season after what he described as a ``consistent summer’’ but ``without anything major’’.
He batted at No.3 for Geelong that finished fifth in Victoria’s Premier Cricket competition. Davies said given the log-jam of players pushing for state selection in Victoria, he decided to cross the border and try his luck in SA.

``In Victoria they’re very strong at state level and I was looking for an opportunity in SA,’’ he said.

``I’d be disappointed down the track if I didn’t give it a crack over here.

``Port (Adelaide) got in touch with me, I had a chat with Mark Sorell (Redbacks coach) and SA seemed like a good fit.’’

Davies arrived in Adelaide in July and after three months of training, is itching to start the season.

``I can’t wait, it feels like it’s been almost a year since I’ve played,’’ he said.

Fellow Victorian, Ludeman, received a rookie contract with the Redbacks after a stellar season with Carlton. The 22-year-old was named Premier Cricket’s wicket-keeper of the year after finishing with 51 dismissals.

Tea Tree Gully will rely on an even contribution from its young squad as it strives to climb in to the Grade Cricket top four this season, new captain Adam Mossop says. Mossop, who replaces Ben Cameron as skipper in the two-day format, said the Bulls had added a couple of new players to its squad, including former East Torrens bowler Scott Strangio and Kensington all-rounder Scott Gillies.

``Scott Strangio played at Gepps Cross last year but he was in the grade cricket team of the year only a few years ago,’’ Mossop said.

``He’ll add a bit of variety to our bowling line-up because we haven’t had a left arm opener that can swing it. ``Scott Gillies will add depth to our batting and can also bowl when required.

``We need to improve in all areas, we’ve got a very young team so we’ll need everyone contributing rather than just a couple of guys doing everything.’’

Adelaide University has also added a Canberra recruit in Tom Thornton, but loses former Redbacks skipper Nathan Adcock to retirement.

Glenelg will field a new bowling attack after losing its three best bowlers from last season. Jason Donnelly has returned to New Zealand after receiving a First Class contract, Steven Rowe has moved to the UK with his wife and Shae Stuivenberg is expected to be sidelined with shin splints.

Draw for Round One, October 3/10:
Southern District v Northern Districts; Adelaide v Sturt; University v Tea Tree Gully; East Torrens v Glenelg; Port Adelaide v Kensington; Prospect v West Torrens, Woodville - bye.

Lewis Hatchett returns for 2009/10

Overseas former Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy recruit Lewis "McRib" Hatchett returns to SDCC this week to rekindle the love-in formed last season whilst boarding with the Jolly family.

Lewis returns for the full season and the coaching staff at SDCC are thrilled that he will add even greater depth and quality to the squad and form a vital part of our fast bowling team. His work ethic and enthusiasm for the game was apparent last season and second to none at the club.

During his stay Lewis will be involved in developing his coaching creditials and will be coaching the Stingrays BankSA squad in this years carnival with the assistance of club coach (and former BankSA coach) Abe Moore.

Here is some of what Lewis had to say in last seasons centrefold spread in the SACA 'Between the Wickets' publication.

Why did you get involved in the Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy?
To improve certain areas of my game so that it gives me the best possible chance of me reaching my goals/dreams back home. The DLCA seemed the best opportunity for me to do this.

What do you hope to gain out of your experiences from the Academy?
A better understanding of myself in all aspects of the game, physically, mentally and technically.

What does your day to day schedule consist of?
- A skill based session (batting and bowling)
- A fitness session (either speed, agility or cardio)
- Gym sessions
- Fielding sessions twice a week
- Recovery sessions

Have you enjoyed your time playing for Southern District, and have they accommodated you well?
Due to injury I haven’t played much cricket at Southern but the guys there are fantastic people and have all made me feel welcome to the Club. The family I am staying with are incredible and I
can’t thank them enough for making me feel so at home and the things they have helped me with.

What are the major differences you’ve noticed between English and Australian cricket?
The professionalism of club sides is amazing. Each player wants to make themselves better or the best they can be, even if it’s just their hobby. Another would be the standards and attention to detail that Australian cricket demands from Grade Cricket to International level.

Stingray In's & Out's 2009/10

With the A grade season less than 2 weeks away we have been mighty impressed with the quality of players who have joined the club to represent the Stingrays this season.

Ins include: Bowler Michael Delaney (ACT comets); Allrounder Brett Knowles (ACT); Allrounder Dean Chambers returns from a stint with Brighton CC; Batter/LS bowler Brendan McCormack (Sheidow Park); Quick Jarrod McCormack (Sheidow Park); Keeper/batter Steven Ford (Sheidow Park); Medium pace bowler Reece Button (Port Noarlunga) are a few noteable inclusions who have been regulars at training.

Several other possible new players (depending on injury) include Cory McIvor and Jason Skarfe from the SCL. We also welcome Cameron Cox and Alex Shute from the local area.

Outs this season include off-spin/straight slow bowler Daniel Kendrick (Woodville-South); former C grade skipper Michael Smith (Reynella); Brendan McKeough who never truly recovered from a devastating spell of T20 bowling in 2007 (Reynella) and Batsman/LS bowler Erik Laubscher (West-Torrens).

We wish all departing Stingrays the very best of luck with their new clubs and look forward to following their success over the season & hope to see again them at SDCC in the near future.
