Joraslafsky Earns Round One Rising Star Nomination

Southern District off spinner Tom Joraslafsky has earned the first Rising Star nomination for season 2011/12 thanks to his tight performance with the ball.

At Bice Oval, Tea Tree Gully captain Matthew Weaver won the toss and elected to send the home team into bat. Openers Daniel Irvine (23) and Simon Roberts (14) got the Stingrays off to a steady start before Brenton Maiolo came and went adding just one run to the score. Josh Barrett (45), Nick Bowen (23) and Shaun Tanner (24) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures and add any substance to the Stingrays total as the other batsmen struggled around them. Tea Tree Gully’s Adam Somerfield, Tim Cronin and Brad Evans all led with the ball. Southern District were eventually bowled out for 136, giving their bowlers a small total to work with.

Tea Tree Gully were required to commence their run chase late on day one. Joraslafsky took an early key wicket, snagging dangerous opener Tim Evans for seven runs. Joraslafsky’s off spin bowling again came in to play late in the innings as he took the wickets of Brad Evans, West End Redback Jake Haberfield and Callum Graeber. Joraslasky’s tight bowling (4/32 from 15.5 overs) ensured the Bulls were restricted to 98 runs and Southern District’s total was defended.

Commencing in season 2006/07, the Grade Cricket Rising Star Award was introduced to acknowledge the outstanding performances of some of the young players within our Grade Cricket Competition. Each round, a player under the age of 23, having played less than 20 A Grade matches is selected as the Grade Cricket Rising Star for that Round. From these nominations, a Grade Cricket Rising Star of the Year is selected. This player will be awarded the Jason Gillespie Medal at the Bradman Medal Presentation at the end of the season.

Hard Wicket Upgrade Complete

The much needed upgrade to our hard wicket nets has been completed. The new facility will provide a fanatastic coaching venue for all our club to use. The facility has 3 new hard wickets, drop down net at the rear to help maintain the cricket balls, pull out nets, longer run up for fast bowlers, an over hanging net to restrict the balls being hit out of the net and they are fully lockerable.

The club wishes to thank the Department of Recreation and Sport, City of Onkaparinga and the South Australian Cricket Association for supporting the upgrade in the facility.

The club would also like to thank club members who have contributed to the completion of the project. Senior players including Nick Bowen, Scott Heywood, Shaun Tanner, Corey McIvor, Deon Laubscher plus club committee member Paul Charman. We also thank juniors and their parents who have assisted in watering and general clean up of the area.

The club has invested significant funds into the upgrade and we expect that the facility to be respected by all that use it.

The practice wickets are a shop front to our club for new junior members and we believe the upgrade will provide a professional look to our club as well as serve our cricketers and coaches well.

Tribute to Club Life Member Zane O'Connor

The club has lost a great friend, supporter and character, Club Life Member Zane O'Connor passed away last week. After a significant illness last year Zane had been fighting to regain good health, during that time he was seen in his red Mitsubishi station wagon watching the home games at Bice Oval and continuing to support our club despite his health.

I remember last year walking with Zane into the change rooms after a significant win and both enjoying the the club song, a moment I know Zane enjoyed.

Club Life Member Paul Charman has put pen to paper to share his recollections and respect for a man who will be sadly missed.

Some brief thoughts on Zane

I first met Zane in the early 1980’s when I started coaching Christies Beach Junior cricket and Alby was playing. Then when I started SDCC Alby played for them and Zane has been a constant at SDCC since then.

I have many memories of travelling to games of cricket with Zane all over the southern area and across Adelaide, mainly in his white Torana a car that was nicknamed Jesus because, despite the fact that the boot didn’t work, the doors and windows stuck and it stopped when it wanted to, Zane managed to fix all its problems with a large screwdriver and a few expletives. There are many other memories of Zane being at every game Alby and later Nugget played as juniors, scoring with his magic red pen, helping with the matting, helping at working bees and holding the fort at games whilst the rest of the parents went to the pub in the afternoon tea break. In later years he scored and managed for the seniors and was a regular at games on Saturdays and club functions.

Most of all there are memories of how proud he was of Alby and Nugget and their cricket. The one thing I have no memory of is ever having to ask him to help because if there was something to be done he simply did it.

Clubs and for that matter communities are built around people like Zane. He was justifiably proud of the significant role he played in the formation and development of SDCC in the early years when things were tough. We in turn are very privileged to have had someone like Zane at our club. Time may have dimmed some memories but as the founder of SDCC I have never known the club to be without Zane so it is going to be very strange to start a new year of cricket without the thought of Zane popping in on a Saturday for a beer and a chat. Condolences to Jean, Alby Samantha and Nuggett.

Zane will be farewelled at the Centennial Park Cemetery on Monday August 8th at 11:30 in the Heysen Chapel.

Welcome to Season 2011/12

On behalf of the Stingrays coaching staff, Welcome to season 2011/12! The coaches and captains have been busily preparing a pre-season schedule to help us to hit the ground running in round one. We have tweaked the format from the past two pre-seasons to include more core skills sessions, with a greater focus on skill development and strategic/decision making aspects of the game

To cut down travel commitments, we are utilising the indoor facilities at the ICA for a significant portion, with only a handful of sessions at Adelaide Oval in September in the lead up to round 1.

You will notice that pre-season sessions are designed to allow most players two core skill sessions per week for between 6-10 weeks. A player specific list for individual sessions is included with the pre-season calendar. This is a guide of who we expect will be attending these sessions.

Players can be added or removed from sessions as per their “want”, so take a moment to look at our expectations, and consider your needs and availability.

It is each players responsibility to contact me on 0419 537 998 or abe@stingrays.com.au by Sat July 30th to discuss your needs, confirm your starting date for pre-season, and “book in” your attendance at individual sessions.

As a club we are (and should be) measured by the success of our A grade side. Our opponents will be well prepared and hungry for success. We have been building towards A Grade finals for the past few years with success in the lower grades, and it is now time for our very best to fly the flag for Southern District and create some history!

Look forward to hearing from each of you,

Abe Moore

The club has a new mobile app for iPhone/iPod touch and Android smartphones. Coupled with the new MyCricket app, players and supporters should be able to better keep up to date with news, results, ladders etc. Search for SDCC or stingrays cricket at the app store.

While the club has welcomed many new faces to the committee this season including Bob Bache and Richard Ridley, we still need volunteers for vital game day roles including scoring & managing. If you are keen to help in any of these roles in any grade, please let us know!

Tanner Appointed Club Captain

Talented all-rounder Shaun Tanner was appointed as club captain at a club management committee meeting during the week. Shaun takes over from Simon Roberts who resigned the position after skippering the club through the past two seasons.

In a smooth succession, Shaun promotion to club captain follows two seasons as Simon's vice-captain, and outright captain of the T20 side. Previously he captained Port Noarlunga to a premiership before returning to grade cricket with the Stingrays. Shaun was a part of the grade cricket team of the year last season, the only spinner chosen in that side.

Jason Riley will continue in his position as B grade skipper after leading his disciplined side to an emphatic premiership win. Club coach Abe Moore has also been reappointed for the upcoming season.

The new season is fast approaching, with spacious new home change-rooms being fitted out and a high quality new hard wicket training facility being built, the club is moving forward on and off the field.

History in the Making

With the excitement and associated nerves of playing in a Grand Final our men’s B and C Grade teams went into battle for our club against Woodville in the C's and Sturt in the B's. Both teams had played in Grand Finals last year with our C Grade winning against Woodville and our B Grade losing after the game was abandon due to rain to top place finisher Northern Districts.

Our B grade had unfinished business, feeling robbed of the opportunity to play last year they were focussed on getting the best out of each other and doing the club proud. With significant rain falling over the week leading into the match our B Grade opening batsman and curator Brenton Maiolo did a magnificent job in managing the weather and pitch preparation to present a fair cricket wicket. Sturt won the toss and elected to bat, again an endorsement of the pitch, Southern skipper Jason Riley was also looking to bat if the toss fell his way. Sturt started positively with some assertive stroke play against Jarryd McCormack and Matthew Sugg. With adjustments to length and bowling a tempting line Matthew Sugg soon helped Southern grab control, his first wicket saw dangerous opening batsman Watson caught brilliantly at short cover by Brenton Maiolo low to his left, this was followed two runs later by an edge to first slip and a clean as a whistle take by veteran Jason Riley. The Sugg impact was not over and a further feather nick to keeper Steven Ford saw Sturt top order undone and Matthew Sugg with three valuable wickets. Jarryd McCormack who had kept the pressure on batsman after a nervous start created more havoc and immediately took the fourth wicket without Sturt adding a run, at 4 for 22 Sturt attempted to dig in and re-establish their innings. Sturt skipper Matthew Burr, supported by Stagg put on 26 before Patrick Jolly tempted Stagg with a wide delivery and an edge well taken again by Jason Riley saw the fifth wicket fall. Tom Joraslafsky then got in on the action and with flight, (not much spin) deceived the Sturt Skipper into miss hitting the ball to cover, Paul Roberts accepted the gift and Sturt were 6 for 56. The Southern momentum didn't stop there Patrick Jolly chimed in again with a regulation edge to Steven Ford, 7 for 57. While on a tactical roll, Jason Riley had one more trick up his sleeve and turned to Scott Heywood, questions were asked by knowing spectators but the skipper new better and showed faith in his fellow stalwart, Scott didn't let him down immediately removing Wilson, 8 for 70. Southern had the smell of blood and were looking to wrap up the innings, again the skipper turned the screws and engulfed the batsman with 6 fielders close to the bat striving to get to the 9th wicket before tea, Tommy J did the rest, this time using the well prepared wicket to gain turn and bounce the inside edge was collected and Brenton Maiolo won the raffle and accepted the catch, 9 for 71 and an extra half hour to bowl. Again Scott Heywood did the job, with a smile and a healthy repour with umpire Uthenwauld and a number eleven throwing the defensive technique book out Scott wrapped up the inning with a very plumb LBW, Sturt all out 84. Bowling figures included; Sugg 3 for 31, McCormack 1 for 16, Jolly 2 for 8, Joraslafsky 2 for 24 and Heywood 2 for 5.

With some 36 overs still remaining on day 1 openers Paul Roberts and Brenton Maiolo need to make a strong statement, the wicket conditions had not changed and Southern batsman needed to play the Sturt side out of the game. That's just what they did openers posted a 47 run partnership before Paul fell LBW to Barnhurst for 27. This brought all-rounder Matthew Sugg to the crease to join Brenton Maiolo, together they held their nerve and worked the ball into gaps, running between wickets well and controlling the pace and accumulation of runs. Sugg judgement of line was excellent and anything on leg stump was eased away for 1, 2 or 4. In a twist of faint Southern reach 1 for 84 at last ball bowled and need to come back on day 2 to complete the mission.

Aware of not giving Sturt any chance Sugg and Maiolo started the day as they had finished day 1, a strong resolve to play Sturt out of the game. This they did, with Sturt all but conceding by bowling various non bowlers just before drinks. Brenton Maiolo attempting to outscore his partner skied a ball to mid-wicket and was caught, a solid 54 and job well done. At this point Sturt captain Matthew Burr extended his hand as a sign of conceding defeat and with Sugg not out 56 the Grand Final victory was Southern's.

After a full day and an hour on the second day captain Jason Riley and his players had outclassed respected rivals Sturt and had secured club history by winning our first B Grade flag.

In a well convened post match ceremony Jason Riley thanked Sturt for the game, recognised a band of volunteers for supporting his teams bid for finals glory and recognised his team’s season and every player’s contribution.

Congratulations and well done to our B Grade team!!!

C Grade Summary

In the C's the story was different, we lost the toss and were sent in. With an early loss of Rhys Barrett, Brendan McCormack and Tom Phillips worked hard to get the Stingrays back on track, but at 30 we lost our second wicket with Tom Phillips out for 11. This brought Kuang Tan together with Brendan McCormack, the experienced pair steadied the ship and put on 41 before Brendan McCormack fell for 34 after over two hours at the crease. Kuang Tan (20) followed immediately after and suddenly Southern were 4 for 71 and both experienced players out. Unfortunately the remaining batsman could not gain any traction and wickets fell in pairs with Chad Franceschini (9) and Corey McIvor (8) both being dismissed with the score on 89, then followed Deon Laubscher (4) with the total on 96, skipper Steve Kerr (2) out a run later. The final two wickets fell, at 102, Jamie Robshaw (7) and then on 106 all out, Sean Williams (4), Daniel Rogers remained 0 not out.

This left Southern a huge task to defend 106 and retain the mantle of C Grade Champions. Sean Williams struck early with Woodville losing their first wicket when the score was 13, then 2 runs later Steve Kerr stuck to have Woodville 2 for 15. With stumps on day one looming Southern were keen to make inroads to the Woodville batting and bowlers did create 3 difficult chances but unfortunately they were not taken and Woodville were 2 for 25 at stumps on day 1.

With all to play for the Southern lads set about making day 2 theirs, Corey McIvor toiled hard taking the first two wicket of the day having Woodville slightly ahead at 4 for 58. At 4 for 79 Woodville looked well in control but up stepped skipper Steve Kerr and Daniel Rogers, Kerr picked up the next wicket, number 5 and then 3 runs later Rogers made another break through and Woodville were suddenly 6 for 82. Kerr continued to work hard and two more wicket fells one at 94 and then next at 100. With 7 runs for victory and two wickets in hand Woodville looked the goods but again the Stingrays wouldn't give up and Corey McIvor broke through to have the Peckers 9 for 102. What a game and what a finish, with a strong local crowd supporting Woodville and with only a hand full of runs left to defend Woodville proved too strong and scraped over the line in a game that all participants and supporters will remember.

Bowling figures included Sean Williams 1 for 22 of 15, Steve Kerr 22 overs 4 for 35, Corey McIvor 16 overs 3 for 14, Daniel Rogers 1 for 20 of 14 overs and Jamie Robshaw o for 14 of 8 overs.

The Stingrays boys did us proud showing real determination and fight and there is no doubt gaining themselves and our club real respect. The Woodville officials recognised this in post match speeches and while no consolation prize it provides heartening encouragement for next season. The C's have played in 3 grand finals in a row and have tasted defeat and victory along the way, these experiences build character and our club. Recognition must go to Steve Kerr for drawing the team together over the last two seasons, a job well done.

See you on April 15 to celebrate season 2010-11.

McIvor Scores SACA Rising Star Award for Round 11

In just his seventh XXXX Gold A Grade game, Sean McIvor continues to enjoy a magnificent start to his career at the top. The 22 year old currently sits 10th on the leader board for the XXXX Gold A Grade competition bowling tally, with 20 wickets and now with his second five wicket haul for the season.

In a battle for a finals birth, Southern District played host to Glenelg at Bice Oval. Sent in to bat by Glenelg’s Cullen Bailey, the Stingrays were in trouble early slumping to 3/15 before Nick Bowen (50) and Josh Barrett (27) showed some heroics with bat to get Southern out of trouble with a 67 run partnership to take the total to 3/82 before Barrett was dismissed. The Stingrays then lost their next three wickets for just seven runs. Some lower order hitting by Robbie McCard ensured the total reached triple figures, with the home side eventually dismissed for 122 with Tim Fernandez taking 6/35.

In reply, Glenelg lost the early wicket of Edward Senneck to be 1/7 before McIvor took the wicket of Wade Hancock and then the prized wicket of Bailey. Nathan Schollar (43) guided the Seahorses closer to the Stingrays total. Still requiring two more wickets for a Southern District victory, the home teams were unable to hold off Glenelg who were all out for 124 with McIvor taking the final wicket of Fernandez.

In 2009/10, McIvor represented the Seaford Rise Cricket Club and collected 34 wickets for the season. This season McIvor began in the XXXX Gold B Grade, played a couple of XXXX Gold Twenty20 matches before debuting in round six against Sturt. In this match he collected 4/54 from a mammoth 30 overs, whilst he took a further 5/52 against Woodville. Sean follows Josh Barrett who was the rising star nominee for round one.

Port Noarlunga Chase Down T20 Smash Title

Port Noarlunga took out the inaugural T20 Smash title by defeating Kangarilla in the final match of the elimination tournament on Sunday. The match featured Stingrays captain Simon Roberts (Kangarilla) and T20 skipper Shaun Tanner (Port) and saw Port Noarlunga chase the very competitive 131 required for victory with an over to spare. Port collected the $500 winners cheque after also beating Seaford and Flagstaff Hill during the opening rounds. Kangarilla made the final by easily accounting for Noarlunga and the Stingrays combined C/D grade side. Games were played in good spirit and SDCC hopes to make the event an annual event on the Southern Cricket calendar.

Other Stingray players returning to their club of origin to bolster those sides included Sean McIvor (Seaford), Brenton Maiolo (Reynella), Pat Jolly (Morphett vale), Josh Barrett (Flagstaff Hill).

Southern District thanks President Harvey Jolly who planned the event, well supported by his army of volunteer Stingrays.

An initial squad of 12 players have been anounced to represent Southern District in this seasons BankSA shield. Stingrays Sweep Port to End 2010 on a High

Southern District recorded an unusual sweep in round 7 winning all seven senior mens games against Port Adelaide, followed by a Heroes and Villans Christmas party back at the club. The round featured an A grade one-day match (dual points in two and one-day comps) as well as back to back T20 games for B,C & D grades.

In the A grade the Stringrays bounced back from a loss against Sturt to outpoint Port at Bice oval. Southern Captain Simon Roberts returned to form with a well compiled 46* after Joel Garrett also contributed a patient 37 at the top of the innings as Southern closed at 6/169. Port were strangled early by miserly bowling from Sean McIvor (2/6 off 10) with skipper Roberts chipping in with 3 for 14. Shaun Tanner and Paul Roberts completed the slow bowling onslaught with 2/19 and 2/14 respectively. Port were all out for 121 leaving Southern sitting 2nd at the break. With 6 games still in hand (including a rescheduled match against ET) the Rays will need at least 3 wins to feature in finals for the first time in several years.

The B grade snuck over the line in game two thanks to super over heroics from Jack Taylor and Robbie McCard. Finishing on 112 a piece, the match went to a super over which saw southern 0/8 def Port 1/5. Brenton Maiolo scoring 39 and Jack Taylor taking 2/14. Game one saw Taylor unleash with 72 well supported by Matt Sugg with 26 to finish 5/135 from their 20 overs. Port responded to be all out 101 thanks to Blake Trigg (2/15) and Jibber McCormack (2/37).

Southern Smacked Port in both C grade encounters, easily chasing down Ports 75 in game 1, and resticting Port to just 45 in game 2 chasing 113. The Standout was Brendan McCormack's unbeaten 51 and 2/2 with the ball and a team effort to round off the result.

D grade surprised with strong wins, with "The Chad" Franceschini scoring a brutal 135no in game two as Southern pounded 1/209. Tom Cotter-Gillies took 4 wickets to complete the route. Game one was a more even encounter as Tom Philips continued his good early season form with 43no and Huw Stone and Jack Gwatking scored two wickets a piece.

Southern go into the break on top of the club championship, just ahead of Sturt and no doubt a fast finishing Woodville who have a friendly draw to finish the season.
