When Tennis Balls Attack...

If 9am Sunday morning starts in the middle of July are a little bit of a rough way to start pre-season training, then don't mention the 100mph tennis balls being fired down in an attempt to take heads off... Check out this short video our StingrayTV page:

A handful of Stingray juniors and mentor senior players have been asking some questions of their game for the past few weeks, particularly back foot play. Batting skills sessions at the ICA and spin bowling sessions over the winter have underpinned skill development of some younger and lower grade players in the off season.

Recruiting has also been a focus with several players trialling in this time, their videos can also be seen on the StingraysTV page. Competition for places this season looks set to be fierce.

Pre-season proper kicks off in a condensed format on Sept 1st, dates can be found on the pre-season page at www.stingrays.com.au along with the program for 2009/10

Sporting a united front for sports ground

THREE sporting clubs and Cardijn College have joined forces to tackle a shortage of sports grounds and infrastructure in the south.

Representatives from South Adelaide Football Club (SAFC), the Southern Districts Cricket Club, Noarlunga Little Athletics and Cardijn met for the first time last month to explore developing a shared sports complex on vacant land between Hickinbotham Oval and the college at Noarlunga.

“What is a pretty ugly piece of land could become a vibrant sporting hub that thousands of people could enjoy,” SAFC chief executive Ben Kavenagh told the Southern Times Messenger.

“We’re all looking for the same thing and we are looking at ways of sharing it.”

Each club has either a shortage of training and playing space at their headquarters, or inadequate facilities such as single-sex changerooms.

Mr Kavenagh said it was envisaged the complex would feature new ovals or courts suitable for each sport, plus new buildings such as changerooms.

However, clubs could also tap into existing infrastructure at SAFC or the college.

Cardijn College business manager Johnny Ioannou said the school wanted the oval at the back of its campus to be incorporated into the complex to open it up to the community.

SAFC initiated the talks after it was approached by Onkaparinga Council about its future land needs in planning for the transport-oriented development (TOD) at Noarlunga Centre.

The council wants to develop a hub with 10,000 residents living and working around the centre.

The proposed complex land is owned by Recreation, Sport and Racing Minister Michael Wright. Last month, the Southern Times reported that the State Government had flagged a new sports complex in the south as part of its draft Plan for Greater Adelaide.

Minister Wright’s spokeswoman Emma Cox said the Office for Recreation and Sport would be meeting with group representatives in the coming weeks to discuss options for a sporting complex.

Potential sites for a complex would be identified in plans to be developed by the council in partnership with the State Government, she said.

The group will meet later this month to discuss a feasibility study and concept plans.

The Southern Football League and O’Sullivan Beach/Lonsdale Football Club will also join in talks, while SAFC has also had informal discussions with the Ladybirds Netball Club about a possible relocation.

Pre-Season "Meet and Greet" Invitiation

Dear Players,

On behalf of the Southern District Cricket Club coaching staff, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to a "meet and greet" information night to be held at our Bice Oval clubrooms on Monday 31st of August from 6:30-7:30pm.

The aim of the session will be to introduce skills coaches and outline their roles; clearly define club selection policy; and formally announce all grade Captains and is open to new and returning players.

Shortly players will receive a pre-season invitation from club secretary Justin Ifould (email and mail) which outlines the training dates leading into the season. Should you not receive an invitation please contact abe@stingrays.com.au and one will be organised.

I can confirm that our first full squad training session will be held at Adelaide Oval indoor nets on Tuesday September 1st following our "meet and greet" the previous night.

Pre-season training is greatly condensed compared to recent years which has been designed to maximise player attendance and availability of skills coaches, and allows most players 6 weeks of solid training leading into round 1.

I am thrilled to have been given opportunity to coach the club, and believe the club has assembled an excellent group of skills coaches and leaders to take us into season 2009/10. I will communicate with the playing group by both email and text message from time to time, and regularly post information on the club website www.stingrays.com.au

I look forward to seeing each of you at the information night in a few short weeks.

Regards,

Abe Moore (SDCC Senior coach)

Preseason Training Dates and Invitations

Training dates and venues for the commencement of season 2009/10 at Southern District cricket club are being finalised this week. Invitiations to preseason will be sent via both email where possible and snail mail (in the post). Dates will also be posted online at www.stingrays.com.au asap.

Preseason will be a very much condensed version of previous years, beginning for the full squad only 6 weeks out from game one. This is meant to maximise both attendence, and availability of skills coaches. What can be confirmed is the first full squad training session to be held at SACA indoor nets on Tues Sept 1st from 7:30 to 9:00pm.

The draw for 2009/10 is yet to be released by SACA, but the season is due to commence on Sat October 3rd in the A grade competition, and a week later (Sat 10th) for B, C, D grade mens.
