Jolly Family Cup - Day 1

Southern District and Northern District players, members and supporters joined together yesterday for a fitting tribute to celebrate the contribution of Bruce Jolly OAM to cricket. Presidents from both clubs spoke and a minutes silence was held prior to the round one clash between the clubs vying for the Jolly Family Cup.

Northerns won a toss both captains were happy to loose, and elected to field on a slow, low wicket at Bice Oval. While the pitch offered little assistance to the quicks, scoring was made difficult by an equally unforgiving outfield. Both clubs played patient cricket and waited for opportunity to present.

Southern were seemingly on top at 2 for 120 thanks to contributions of 22 from Brenton Maiolo, 42 from Joel Garrett and 47 from skipper Simon Roberts before a middle order collapse saw 5 wickets fall for just 4 runs. From 7/124 the Stingrays scrambled to 9/161 at the completion of 90 overs thanks to a positive partnership from allrounders Robbie McCard (20) and Shaun Tanner (12).

Both clubs would feel they are in a position to push for the points next week as both welcome Redbacks players to bolster their respective sides.
